POSITION - School Nurse (Part-Time - .5 FTE)

SALARY - Commensurate with experience
POSITION SUMMARY
The School Nurse provides comprehensive school health services that promote the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of students and staff. Working out of the Administration Building, the School Nurse collaborates with students, families, school personnel, healthcare providers, and community agencies to support student health, safety, attendance, and readiness to learn.
The School Nurse assesses student health needs, provides nursing care and health education, coordinates care for students with acute and chronic health conditions, maintains accurate health records, supports compliance with state and local health requirements, and contributes to a safe, inclusive, and supportive school environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Current Michigan Registered Nurse license in good standing
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred
- Current CPR/AED and first-aid certification, or ability to obtain prior to employment
- School nursing experience preferred
- Experience working with children and adolescents preferred
- Knowledge of current nursing practices, student health services, communicable disease prevention, and health and safety regulations
- Demonstrated ability to assess student health needs and respond appropriately to illness, injury, and emergency situations
- Knowledge of and experience with medication administration and the management of acute and chronic health conditions
- Strong organizational, documentation, communication, and collaboration skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with applicable privacy laws and district policies
- Ability to work effectively with students, families, administrators, teachers, support staff, and healthcare providers
- Commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and supportive environment
- Meet all applicable State and Federal licensing and employment requirements
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student Health Services
- Provide nursing assessment, first aid, and health services to students and staff in accordance with professional standards, district policies, and applicable laws
- Assess and respond to student illness, injury, and health concerns
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized health plans, emergency care plans, and other health-related accommodations as appropriate
- Support students with chronic health conditions, including diabetes, asthma, allergies, seizure disorders, and other medical needs
- Administer medications and specialized treatments in accordance with physician orders, parent/guardian authorization, district procedures, and applicable regulations
- Coordinate and monitor health services for students requiring ongoing medical support
- Recognize and respond appropriately to medical emergencies and coordinate emergency medical care when necessary
- Provide health education and promote healthy behaviors, wellness, injury prevention, and personal safety
- Assist with health screenings, immunization compliance, communicable disease prevention, and follow-up activities
- Provide guidance regarding student attendance and participation when health concerns are present
Care Coordination and Communication
- Collaborate with families, school personnel, physicians, therapists, and other healthcare providers to coordinate student care
- Communicate health-related information appropriately and maintain professional, respectful relationships with students and families
- Consult with administrators and staff regarding student health needs, safety concerns, emergency procedures, and appropriate school-based supports
- Participate in meetings related to student health, special education, Section 504, individualized plans, and other support services, as appropriate
- Provide staff training and consultation regarding health procedures, medication administration, emergency response, infection control, and student-specific needs
- Serve as a health resource for district and building personnel
Records, Compliance, and Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date student health records, medication logs, immunization records, screening results, and related documentation
- Maintain compliance with district policies, state requirements, professional standards, and applicable privacy laws
- Maintain current knowledge of school health practices, public health guidance, legal requirements, and evidence-based nursing practices
- Assist with the development, review, and implementation of district health policies and emergency procedures
- Contribute to district wellness, safety, emergency preparedness, and school improvement initiatives
- Participate in professional learning opportunities, district meetings, and relevant committees
- Regularly review and stay current with district communications and updates
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or designee
