JOB PURPOSE:
A School Counselor is responsible for assisting students in achieving personal fulfillment and
successes by providing them with guidance and counseling services to make successful
personal, educational and occupational life plans.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
1. Holds appropriate New Jersey School Counselor or Student Personnel Services
Certification or is eligible for same.
2. Exceptional writing, oral, interpersonal, and counseling skills.
3. Required criminal history background check and proof of US citizenship or legal resident
alien status.
4. Other qualifications or alternative qualifications as determined by the Superintendent
of Schools.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
(Some may be age/ school specific)
1. Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the use of teacher
comments, interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent
data and then works with students in evolving educational and career plans in terms of
such evaluation.
2. Provides both group and individual counseling to students in an effort to assist them in
their academic, personal and career development.
3. Maintains all types of required student records. Keeps information confidential which is
needed to protect student welfare in accordance with law, policy and regulation.
4. Provides information and prepares recommendations to colleges for admissions and
scholarships, as well as to potential employers and other agencies.
5. Works closely with teachers, administrators and other professional staff members,
providing information and assistance where needed for the ultimate benefit of
students.
6. Maintains a close relationship with the child study team.
7. Works closely with and involves parents in planning students' career plans, and assists
in the resolution of school-related problems.
8. Assists in the organization and administration of standardized test programs.
9. Once a student is registered, the school counselor provides orientation and information
relative to school procedures, curriculum and extracurricular opportunities. Reviews
records from previous school(s).
10. Maintains and adjusts student schedules as required by administration.
11. Works to prevent students from dropping out of school, and assists those that do in
finding alternative educational programs and/or employment.
12. Assists with arrangements for summer work and/or enrollment in summer school
programs to make up noted deficiencies.
13. Maintains a professional office environment, appropriate relationships with students,
and positive relationships with the building administration, parents, and other staff.
14. Assists in the evaluation of current curriculum offerings and in the planning, selection
and implementation of new course offerings.
15. Makes effective use of community and staff resources and coordinates services with
other staff in order to increase the benefits for students.
16. Provides for a smooth transition from elementary school to middle school and middle
school to high school, which may include orientation programs for students and
parents.
17. Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through in service
education and other professional growth activities.
18. Leads or participates on various committees or teams such as but not limited to
Intervention & Referral Services, Social & Emotional Learning, etc.
19. Functions as the Anti-Bullying Specialist as assigned by administration.
20. Enforces all board policies, administrative directions and state laws/regulations,

be assigned or required by state law and board policies.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office
equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The
noise level is low.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The
employee frequently is required to sit, stand or walk. Specific vision abilities required for this
job includes the ability to read large amounts of information. The employee is occasionally
required to kneel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
TRAVEL
This position requires travel on occasion to school locations and/or department locations.
