PRINCIPAL
FOR
INSTRUCTION
AND
SUPERVISION
JOB
GOAL:
To
provide
a
comprehensive
guidance
and
counseling
program
for
pupils
in
grades
9-12
and
specifically
to
provide
services
that
meet
the
special
needs
of
his/her
assigned
counselors
in
the
areas
of
education,
career,
and
personal/social
planning
and
development.
While
counseling
pupils
is
the
primary
concern,
the
secondary
school
counselor
also
serves
as
a
consultant
to
parents,
teachers,
administrators
and
other
pupil
services
specialists.
PERFORMANCE
RESPONSIBILITIES:
In
order
to
fulfill
his/her
responsibilities,
the
SECONDARY
SCHOOL
COUNSELOR
shall:
1.
Provide
assistance
in
the
area
of
program
planning
and
placement
by:
a.
Planning
and
providing
an
orientation
to
entering
students
and
their
parents
regarding
the
school,
its
curriculum,
co-curricular
activities,
services
and
policies.
b.
Collecting,
coordinating,
and
evaluating
pupil
assessment
data
for
placement
purposes
and
to
develop
criteria
for
pupil
placement.
c.
Scheduling
a
program
planning
conference
with
each
pupil
and
his/her
parents
for
the
purpose
of
formulating
short
and
long
term
educational
goals
that
are
consistent
with
the
pupil's
capabilities
and
interests,
and
to
plan
a
program
of
studies
that
meets
the
requirements
for
graduation.
d.
Making
a
periodic
review
and
revision
of
a
pupil's
educational
plan
based
on
interests,
achievement,
aptitude,
and
changes
or
discrepancies
in
pupil
and/or
parental
aspirations.
2.
Assist
pupils
to
maintain
a
level
of
educational
performance
consistent
with
their
capabilities
by:
a.
Cooperating
with
parents
and
teachers
in
the
identification
of
individual
pupil
needs.
b.
Coordinating
and
interpreting
meaningful
information
concerning
pupils
collected
through
conferences
with
pupils
and
parents,
academic
records,
standardized
test
scores
and
child
study
evaluations.
c.
Offering
students
appropriate
placement
alternatives
based
on
accurate
interpretations
of
student
appraisal
data,
short
and
long
term
educational
goals,
and
educational/career
information.
d.
Referring
the
pupil
to
appropriate
specialists
(in
and
out
of
school)
when
the
educational
needs
of
the
pupil
exceed
the
professional
capacity
of
the
counselor.
3.
Provide
assistance
in
the
area
of
post-secondary
planning
and
placement
by:
a.
Maintaining
continuous
communication
with
post-secondary
school
institutions
regarding
their
admission
requirements,
curricula
offerings,
special
programs,
costs,
financial
aid,
student
life,
and
general
academic
environment.
b.
Providing
pupils
and
parents
information
and
assistance
regarding
prerequisites
for
college
selection,
admissions
procedures,
college
admissions
testing
programs,
application
procedures
and
financial
aid
opportunities.
c.
Assisting
the
pupil
and
parent(s)
to
work
out
a
method
of
approach
to
a
comparative
study
of
a
group
of
colleges
or
schools
for
post-secondary
education.
d.
Preparing
for
pupils
a
written
college
recommendation
based
on
an
accurate
evaluation
of
pupil
assessment
data
and
non-assessment
data
from
a
variety
of
sources.
4.
Provide
instruction
and/or
counseling
in
the
area
of
career
planning
and
development
by:
a.
Assisting
pupils
to
develop
an
awareness
of
their
own
interests,
aptitudes,
values,
personality
and
needs,
and
how
they
affect
career
decisions.
b.
Instructing
and
coaching
pupils
on
the
decision-making
process
and
its
use
when
formulating
career
plans
and
decisions.
c.
Instructing
and
coaching
pupils
about
the
world
of
work
sources
of
educational
and
occupational
information,
career
clusters,
sex-role
stereotyping,
job
market
trends,
educational
opportunities,
and
job
seeking
skills.
d.
Assisting
students
in
combining
and
using
knowledge
about
one's
self
and
knowledge
about
the
world
of
work
to
formulate
tentative
career
decisions.
5.
Provide
situational
counseling
to
pupils
with
specialized
concerns
(learning
disabilities,
substance
abuse,
suicide
prevention,
child
abuse,
families
in
transition,
chronic
behavior
problems,
and/or
chronic
absenteeism,
dropouts)
by:
a.
Assisting
the
pupil
to
define
the
problem.
b.
Aiding
the
pupil
to
clarify
his/her
perception
of
the
problem.
c.
Exploring
with
the
pupil
various
alternatives
in
response
to
his/her
problem.
d.
Supporting
the
pupil
in
a
decision
relative
to
his/her
problem
if
said
decision
is
appropriate.
e.
Providing
follow-up
assistance
relative
to
his/her
problem.
f.
Assisting
pupils
who
need
referral
services
to
be
aware
of
and
accept
referral
to
other
specialists
in
pupil
services
or
community
agencies.
g.
Following
district
administrative
procedures
dealing
with
specialized
populations
in
counseling.
6.
Serve
as
a
consultant
to
parents,
classroom
teachers,
administrators
and
other
pupil
services
specialists
by:
a.
Working
with
parents
and
teachers
in
the
identification,
clarification,
understanding
and
remediation
of
individual
pupil
concerns
that
affect
his/her
educational
progress.
b.
Assisting
parents
of
pupils
who
need
specialized
help
to
accept
referral
and
make
effective
use
of
resource
people,
specialists,
and
agencies
outside
the
school.
c.
Acting
as
a
curriculum
consultant
to
supervisors
and
administrators
regarding
curriculum
offerings
to
meet
the
abilities,
needs
and
interests
of
pupils.
d.
Collecting,
evaluating
and
interpreting
pupil
assessment
data
or
information
to
parents,
teachers,
administrators,
and
other
pupil
services
specialists.
C.
Consulting
with
parents,
individually
and
in
groups
on
college
planning
and
selection,
program
planning
and
placement,
and
developmental
needs
and
concerns
of
youth.
7.
Prepare
and
maintain
mandated
records
and
reports
by:
a.
Completing
and
submitting
to
the
Director
of
Pupil
Services
a
monthly
report
on
the
guidance
and
counseling
services
provided
by
the
school
counselor.
b.
Reviewing
and
maintaining
pupil
records
consistent
with
NJAC
6:3.2.
c.
Preparing
and
submitting
written
summaries
on
pupil
performance
as
required
for
school
board
hearings
or
the
basic
plan
section
of
the
IEP
for
pupils
receiving
a
special
education
program
or
related
service.
d.
Preparing
for
pupils
a
written
college
recommendation
based
on
an
accurate
evaluation
of
pupil
assessment
data
and
non-assessment
data
from
a
variety
of
sources.
e.
Evaluating
pupil
transcripts
and
records
for
purposes
of
placement,
credit,
and
graduation.
8.
Contribute
to
the
