FlexSchool is seeking a warm, collaborative School Counselor (or professional in a related field) to join our community and support our gifted and twice-exceptional (2e) students.This is an exciting opportunity to help shape a small elementary program designed for students who learn and experience the world in different ways. Our counselor works closely with students, teachers, families, and school leadership to create a supportive, neurodiversity-affirming environment where students feel understood, connected, and able to learn.What You'll DoBuild trusting relationships with students through regular classroom presence and informal connection throughout the school day.Provide proactive and responsive support during periods of overwhelm or dysregulation.Maintain a welcoming support space students can access for recharging, emotional or sensory regulation, and problem-solving.Provide individual counseling and IEP-mandated counseling services as needed.Facilitate weekly small-group counseling sessions.Teach health and social-emotional learning with a focus on self-understanding, relationships, emotional well-being, and self-advocacy.Partner with teachers to understand individual student profiles and develop proactive, neurodiversity-affirming supports that promote engagement, participation, and access.Collaborate with the Head of School to develop individualized student support and safety plans when needed.Maintain regular, collaborative communication with families and outside service providers.Develop and update student learning profiles using evaluations and input from students, families, staff, and outside providers.Participate in IEP meetings, student articulation meetings, and professional development; participate in and, as appropriate, lead staff training.Collaborate with school leadership and admissions in reviewing and supporting prospective students, including consultation with outside clinicians when appropriate.Supervise counseling interns, if applicable.You May Be a Great Fit If You...Genuinely enjoy working with gifted, neurodivergent, and twice-exceptional students.Approach behavior with curiosity rather than assuming defiance or lack of motivation.Understand the importance of relationships and connection in helping students feel safe and ready to learn.Can provide clear structure while preserving student autonomy and choice.Are comfortable adapting your plans or counseling approach when something isn't working.Stay calm, flexible, and supportive when students are having a hard time.Understand that regulation may look different for different students.Are creative, enthusiastic, collaborative, and reflective.Bring warmth and a sense of humor to your work with students.Are open to feedback and ongoing learning about neurodiversity, autism, 2e development, and disability-affirming practice.QualificationsMaster's degree in School Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field preferred.2+ years of experience working with children in a school, counseling, or related setting preferred.Experience supporting twice-exceptional learners strongly preferred.Familiarity with neurodiversity-affirming approaches such as Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) or DIR/Floortime, co-regulation, and strengths-based student support preferred.Understanding of sensory needs, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and developmental differences.Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-building skills.Schedule This is a full-time, academic-year position at our Berkeley Heights, NJ campus.
