Job Title: Bus Driver
Classification: Transportation
Reports To: Department Administrator
General Description: Under the direction of the Transportation Director, is responsible for safely
transporting students to and from school. This position may include, but not be limited to, the following
performance responsibilities, qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities.
Performance Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
- Drives assigned route safely within time limitation; reads and follows maps and route
schedules.
- Meets district expectations maintaining appropriate student behavior on buses which
includes contacting parents and working with building administrators.
- Cleans the bus (inside and out) and sanitizes the bus (inside).
- Correctly operates a two-way radio to transmit and receive messages to dispatch and
other drivers.
- Updates a student roster as requested by supervisor or designee.
- Fills out necessary paperwork for State Pupil Transportation Operation Allocation report
as assigned.
- Fills out payroll forms as directed.
- Conducts and documents a thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspection to meet state
requirements by using Tyler Tech tablets.
- Conducts state required emergency exit drills as per statute and board policy 8124.
- Checks oil, water and belts.
- Reports all mechanical problems to the mechanics.
- Maintains daily mileage reports and student counts by using Tyler Tech tablets.
- Fuels vehicles as needed.
- Assists the mechanics and maintenance personnel with the chaining of buses as needed in
winter.
- Participates in meetings, in-service trainings, workshops, etc. as required for the purpose
of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform the job functions.
- Participates in new learning as determined by the district/building.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Have at least five years of experience as a licensed driver of a passenger vehicle.
- Valid Washington State Driver's License with acceptable driving record.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (Washington State Class B CDL with passenger, "S" for
school bus driver, and air brake endorsements) with valid Washington State Bus Driver
certification, obtained by the successful completion of school bus driver training class.
- Valid First Aid/CPR with AED certificates.
- Provide certification of passing a Department of Transportation physical examination
every two (2) years in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and
continue to meet this requirement in between exams.
- Provide a complete driving abstract from the Washington State Department of Licensing.
The driving abstract findings must meet Washington Administrative Code (WAC)
requirements.
- Selected applicants will be required to take, and must pass, a Human Performance
Evaluation (HPE), at the district's expense.
- Blood Borne Pathogen Training.
- Submit to random drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- School bus drivers must meet, and continue to meet, all requirements listed in the
WAC 392-144.
- Knowledge of dealing with medical problems related to transporting students.
- Knowledge and application of all safety procedures and laws for bus drivers.
- Knowledge of the district's streets and the ability to read route sheets and maps.
- Skills in organization, time management, flexibility and multitasking.
- Ability to maintain timely and regular attendance.
- Ability to adapt to changes in all transportation operations.
- Ability to read, write, speak and communicate effectively.
- Ability to use a two-way radio.
- Ability to be available in case of emergencies (school closures).
- Ability to present a professional appearance and attitude.
- Ability to perform duties via written and verbal orders.
- Ability to attend all mandatory meetings and training.
- Ability to attend special education in-service required to drive disabled children.
- Ability to be proficient in the operation of all fleet vehicles.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of student information at all times, including
on site, interdepartmentally, between buildings, and within the community.
- Ability to take direction in a professional manner and follow through.
- Ability to exercise sensitivity in dealing with individuals of diverse socio-economic
backgrounds, cognitive and physical abilities as well as with individuals of diverse cultural
and ethnic backgrounds.
- Ability to maintain good working relations with co-workers, staff, students and community
members.
- Ability to follow SSD policies, procedures and protocols.
- Ability to maintain a consistent presence at assigned work location and fulfill assigned
hours.
- Ability to provide a positive and service-oriented attitude to any and all staff, parent
and community member.
Working Environment & Physical Requirements:
In terms of an 8-hour day, "Seldom" = 1-33%, "Occasionally" = 11-33%, "Frequently" = 34-66%
"Constant" = 67-100%. Seldom: standing, carrying up to 10lbs., reaching below the waist,
bend/stoop, twist trunk, climb/balance. Seldom/Occasionally: walking. Occasionally: reaching
overhead and from shoulder to waist. Occasionally/Frequently: reaching, handling, and use of hand
and finger dexterity. Frequently: talking, pushing/pulling. Constant: sitting, twisting the neck,
handling/grasping, using foot controls, vision, and hearing.
Work is performed in a variety of environmental conditions, including rain, snow, sunshine and ice and
this also includes a variety of temperatures changes due to weather.
