Reporting to the Director of Production, the Scenic Artist supports the realization of each production's scenic design through skilled painting, surface treatments, and other specialized artistic techniques.

Working on a production-by-production basis, the Scenic Artist interprets and executes the Scenic Designer's concepts, develops show-specific treatments in collaboration with the design and production teams, and provides professional scenic-art expertise for work beyond the scope of student assignments. The Scenic Artist may work alongside students and shares techniques or guidance but does not supervise them.

Essential Functions

Executes scenic painting, finishing, and specialized surface treatments in accordance with the Scenic Designer's approved design, including show-specific techniques such as color mixing, glazing, texturing, distressing, faux finishing, murals, sculptural treatments, and spray applications.

Collaborates with the Scenic Designer and Technical Director to interpret design intent, clarify artistic and technical requirements, and ensure that completed scenic artwork supports the overall visual concept of the production.

Develops practical plans, samples, color studies, and treatment approaches in collaboration with the Scenic Designer; identifies the materials, tools, equipment, workspace, and safety measures needed to complete the work.

Coordinates with the Technical Director to establish and maintain a scenic-art schedule that integrates with construction, rehearsal, installation, and production deadlines, and communicates progress or potential concerns in a timely manner.

Delivers completed scenic-art work to the agreed artistic and production standards; makes collaborative adjustments as needed and works alongside students when appropriate, sharing professional techniques and safe working practices without serving in a supervisory capacity.

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Required Qualifications: Knowledge and Skills

Minimum of three years of professional scenic-art, theatrical painting, or closely related production experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional training in scenic art, studio art, theatrical production, or a related field.

Portfolio demonstrating relevant scenic-art techniques and completed work.
