A Health Information Management (HIM) Scan Technician digitizes and indexes paper medical records into electronic health record (EHR) systems to keep patient data accurate and easy for care teams to find.

Job Responsibilities

Chart Preparation: Sort, unclip, and flatten paper documents, removing staples and fixing damaged pages before scanning.
Scanning & Digitizing: Operate high-volume document scanners to convert paper files into digital images.
Indexing & Quality Control: Review scanned images for clarity, match files to the correct patient ID or encounter number, and fix any data errors.
Compliance & Privacy: Follow strict rules like HIPAA to keep private health information safe and secure.
Record Maintenance: Resolve missing or unclear document issues and track daily processing logs.

Qualifications

Technical Skills: Basic computer knowledge, strong typing skills, and experience with electronic health record or document imaging software.
Attention to Detail: High accuracy when sorting, scanning, indexing, and labeling patient records. Strong organizational skills and the ability to identify discrepancies and/or missing information. 
Physical Abilities: Ability to sit or stand for long periods, bend, and lift boxes of paper records weighing up to 20 pounds
