    Description

Amazon is seeking an experienced SAP Technical Solution Architect to lead the architecture and engineering teams responsible for ABAP development, SAP Business Technology Platform, and SAP BASIS as part of a large-scale transformation of Amazon's Finance ERP platform.

This role will own the technical architecture and engineering strategy for SAP development, extensibility, platform administration, and operational capabilities. The successful candidate will lead a team of ABAP developers, BTP engineers, and BASIS professionals and establish the technical standards, governance, and delivery mechanisms required to build a secure, scalable, resilient, and maintainable SAP environment.

You will partner with ERP Product, Functional Solution Architecture, Engineering, Security, Controls, Infrastructure, SAP, and implementation partners to translate business and functional requirements into technical solutions. You will guide the platform through design, build, integration, testing, deployment, operations, and continuous improvement while ensuring alignment with clean-core principles and Amazon's engineering and security standards.

This role requires an individual who can move between enterprise architecture decisions and detailed technical problem-solving. You will evaluate solution alternatives, define development and extensibility patterns, resolve complex technical risks, and ensure the ABAP, BTP, and BASIS teams operate as one integrated engineering organization.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Own the SAP technical architecture and engineering strategy across ABAP, BTP, BASIS, integrations, extensibility, and platform operations.
    • Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team of ABAP developers, BTP engineers, and BASIS professionals, establishing clear ownership, priorities, standards, and delivery expectations.
    • Define technical patterns and guardrails for SAP configuration, custom development, workflows, forms, reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, and extensions.
    • Establish and enforce clean-core principles, determining when requirements should be addressed through standard SAP functionality, in-app extensibility, side-by-side BTP extensions, or custom ABAP development.
    • Own the BTP architecture, including account and subaccount design, environments, connectivity, identity, security, application services, integration services, development standards, and lifecycle management.
    • Lead BASIS architecture and operational design across system landscapes, environments, transports, upgrades, patching, performance, capacity, availability, disaster recovery, monitoring, and production support.
    • Establish software-development standards covering solution design, coding, peer reviews, automated testing, documentation, source control, CI/CD, transport management, and release governance.
    • Partner with functional architects and product teams to convert business requirements into scalable technical designs and accurate delivery estimates.
    • Review and approve technical designs and ensure solutions meet requirements for performance, scalability, security, controls, resilience, supportability, and cost.
    • Develop technical roadmaps, architecture documents, decision materials, and executive updates that communicate priorities, risks, trade-offs, and required investments.
    • Evaluate emerging SAP and generative AI capabilities and identify opportunities to improve engineering productivity, user experience, automation, monitoring, and support.

    A day in the life

You will lead the teams responsible for SAP development, BTP, and BASIS while shaping the platform's technical direction. A typical day may include reviewing an extension design, resolving a performance issue, deciding between ABAP and BTP, or evaluating release readiness. You will partner with product, functional architecture, security, and engineering teams to manage dependencies and technical risks. You will also coach team members, review delivery metrics, hold implementation partners accountable, and communicate architecture decisions and trade-offs to senior leaders.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
