Job Title: Sample Management Technician

Job Description

This position is responsible for providing general Sample Management support in a contract research laboratory setting. The Laboratory Technician must demonstrate an understanding of basic scientific terminology, laboratory practices, research, and methods. You will work well within a team and independently on routine tasks, reporting directly to the Associate Director, Operational Controls and Compliance Services and receiving close to moderate supervision. You will support research teams/groups led by other individuals and may be required to obtain direction from outside the traditional reporting structure. The position involves providing internal and external customers with detailed summaries of sample receipts, identifying discrepancies and/or problem areas. Technician Leads will offer day-to-day task direction to ensure the quality of work completed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the maintenance of the Sample Management Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and resolve problems using standard procedures and techniques.
  • Collect data for review by management, utilizing sophisticated spreadsheets and statistical analysis software.
  • Exercise judgment in conducting Sample Management procedures, recognize and address deviations, and report unexpected results.
  • Observe and execute activities consistent with study protocols, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulations, and safety and health practices.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic study design and execution.
  • Execute key activities on a study following appropriate procedures.
  • Maintain organization and record-keeping of the compound and sample repositories.
  • Assist in populating and updating the Sample Management databases.
  • Assist in sample preparation tasks such as weighing, solubilizing, aliquoting, and formulating.
  • Assist in labeling research sample tubes and sample disposition processes.
  • Coordinate, prepare, and execute the shipment of research samples.
  • Assist in assay media preparation.
  • Research and procure commercially available compounds/samples.
  • Query and publish custom reports to exact specifications.
  • Perform tasks related to compound and sample custodianship using LIMS and other information systems.
  • Assist in maintenance and development of the Barcode Label System.
  • Represent SR through routine client contact related to sample receipt.
  • Process time-sensitive requests of sample and reference compounds.
  • Provide feedback to Team Leaders on LIMS or other information systems study design.
  • Responsible for maintenance schedules for laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain, clean, and check the calibration of instrumentation including pipettes, centrifuges, balances, freezers, water/dry-bead baths, and water purifiers.
  • Investigate malfunctions, perform repairs, and contact repair agencies as necessary.
  • Maintain equipment records and maintenance logs in compliance with SR standard operating procedures and GLP regulations.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of all control matrices, QC samples, and compounds.
  • Provide quality control through peer review of maintenance, monitoring, and other Sample Management documentation.
  • Clean wet laboratory spaces, including disinfecting bench tops and hood spaces.
  • Maintain the laboratory in a safe and orderly manner.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 3 years of relevant experience, or Associate degree with 1 year of relevant experience, or Bachelor"s degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications - Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
  • Experience in sample management or familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Ability to be exposed to sample management in a CRO setting.
  • Potential for permanent placement in this department or another department.

Work Environment

The position involves working Monday to Friday during day shifts with the potential to be on call every other weekend. The laboratory setting requires adherence to appropriate safety and study requirements, maintaining a clean and orderly environment, and following Standard Operating Procedures, Good Laboratory Practices requirements, and the Chemical Hygiene Plan.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.
