Description

CPA firm seeking an Experienced State and Local Tax (SALT) Tax Preparer will support the Firm’s State and Local Tax practice by preparing accurate and timely state and local tax returns and related compliance filings for clients across a variety of industries.

The ideal candidate will have at least two years of tax preparation experience, including exposure to state and local tax compliance, and a desire to further develop their knowledge and experience in multistate taxation.

The individual will work closely with senior associates, managers, directors, and partners to support client engagements involving state income and franchise taxes, extensions and estimated payments, apportionment, state modifications, nexus considerations, tax notices, and other state and local tax matters.

Job Responsibilities

  • Prepare state and local income and franchise tax returns for corporations, partnerships, and other business entities.
  • Prepare multistate tax returns and related supporting schedules and workpapers.
  • Prepare state and local tax extensions, estimated tax payments, and other required compliance filings.
  • Calculate state modifications, apportionment factors, taxable income, and other state-specific adjustments.
  • Gather, organize, and analyze client financial and tax information necessary to complete state and local tax filings.
  • Prepare accurate and well-documented tax workpapers in accordance with Firm policies and procedures.
  • Review prior-year returns and client information to identify filing requirements, changes, and potential state tax issues.
  • Assist with determining state filing requirements based on client operations, business activities, and nexus considerations.
  • Perform basic state and local tax research related to filing requirements, tax rates, apportionment, sourcing, nexus, and other compliance matters.
  • Assist with researching and resolving state and local tax notices and correspondence from taxing authorities.
  • Prepare responses and supporting documentation for state taxing authorities under the direction of senior members of the SALT team.
  • Assist with amended returns and other corrective filings, as necessary.
  • Identify inconsistencies, missing information, or potential tax issues during the preparation process and communicate them to senior team members.
  • Communicate with clients and internal engagement teams to obtain information and resolve questions necessary to complete tax filings.
  • Coordinate with federal tax teams to ensure consistency between federal and state tax filings.
  • Monitor assigned engagements and deadlines to ensure returns, extensions, estimates, and other filings are completed accurately and on time.
  • Maintain organized electronic files and documentation in accordance with Firm standards.
  • Stay current on changes to state and local tax laws, filing requirements, and compliance procedures.
  • Participate in Firm training and professional development opportunities to expand technical knowledge of state and local taxation.
  • Perform other tax compliance and SALT-related responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  •  
  • Must be able to work in the office a minimum of 3 days per week. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or MST degree required.
  • Active CPA license or EA certification or in progress preferred. 
  • 1+ years of tax preparation experience, preferably within a CPA firm, public accounting firm, or professional services environment.
  • Experience preparing state and local tax and multistate corporate and/or partnership income and franchise tax returns required.
  • Working knowledge of state income and franchise tax concepts, including apportionment, state modifications, nexus, and filing requirements.
  • Experience preparing tax extensions, estimated payments, supporting schedules, and tax workpapers.
  • Familiarity with federal income tax concepts and their relationship to state tax compliance.
  • Experience researching and responding to state tax notices is a plus.
  • Exposure to sales and use tax or other areas of State and Local Tax is a plus.
  • Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to preparing accurate, high-quality work.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines, particularly during peak tax filing periods.
  • Ability to follow established tax preparation procedures while identifying issues that require additional review.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with members of the tax team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with professional tax preparation and compliance software.
  • Experience with tax research software is a plus.
  • Willingness to continually develop technical knowledge and expertise in state and local taxation.
