    Description

    The Chemical Safety Officer is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the University''s chemical safety program to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations while promoting a safe teaching, research, and healthcare environment. This position manages campus chemical operations, including chemical inventory oversight, hazardous waste collection and disposal, and implementation of the Chemical Hygiene Plan. Working collaboratively with the Life Safety Officer and other departments, this position supports life safety Initiatives, emergency preparedness, emergency response, and continuity of operations, helping to maintain a safe and compliant campus environment. Regular attendance is required to perform the functions of this position. Essential Position Functions & Duties 65% Chemical Safety Program Administration Oversees the University''s chemical safety program to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, EPA, DEQ, DOT, and NFPA standards. Coordinates campus-wide chemical operations, including the storage, inventory management, transportation, collection, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and chemical waste. Administers and maintains the University''s Chemical Hygiene Plan and associated chemical safety policies, procedures, and documentation. Conducts routine laboratory chemical inspections, chemical safety audits, and compliance assessments; identifies deficiencies and develops corrective action plans. Responds to chemical spills, hazardous materials incidents, and other chemical safety emergencies, providing technical guidance and coordinating mitigation efforts. Investigates chemical-related incidents, near misses, and safety concerns; prepares reports and recommends corrective and preventive actions. 15% Life Safety and Emergency Management Support Assists the Life Safety Officer in administering and maintaining campus life safety programs to promote a safe and compliant environment. Supports inspections and compliance activities related to life safety systems, fire protection, and regulatory requirements. 15% Emergency Operations and Emergency Management Assists in the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of the University''s Emergency Operations and Emergency Management programs. Participates in emergency response activities, providing technical expertise during incidents involving hazardous materials, chemical releases, and other campus emergencies.
