Safety Coordinator

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Safety Coordinator to support road construction and paving operations. This position will be responsible for promoting a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with OSHA and company safety requirements, conducting field inspections, and working directly with supervisors and crews to identify and correct potential hazards.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in road construction, asphalt paving, heavy civil construction, or a related industry and understands the unique safety challenges associated with working around heavy equipment, live traffic, roadway projects, and construction crews.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct regular jobsite safety inspections and identify potential hazards.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, company, and project-specific safety requirements.
• Work directly with field supervisors and crews to promote safe work practices.
• Develop, implement, and maintain jobsite safety procedures and programs.
• Conduct daily/weekly safety meetings, toolbox talks, and employee training.
• Support proper traffic control and work-zone safety practices.
• Monitor the safe operation of paving equipment, trucks, rollers, milling machines, excavators, and other heavy equipment.
• Review and assist with Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), and pre-task planning.
• Investigate accidents, injuries, near misses, and property damage incidents and assist with corrective actions.
• Maintain safety records, inspection reports, training documentation, and incident documentation.
• Assist with new-hire safety orientation and ongoing employee training.
• Identify trends and recommend improvements to reduce workplace incidents.
• Ensure proper use of PPE and adherence to company safety policies.
• Work with project management and field leadership to address safety concerns promptly.
• Participate in emergency preparedness and response activities.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of safety experience in road construction, paving, heavy civil, or commercial construction preferred.
• OSHA 30 minimum
• Trenching/confined space competent
• Strong knowledge of OSHA construction safety standards.
• Experience working in active construction zones and around heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of roadway work-zone and traffic-control safety.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to conduct safety training and effectively communicate with field personnel.
• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently while also partnering closely with project and field management.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel between jobsites.

Certifications

• OSHA 30-Hour Construction
• First Aid/CPR/AED
• Competent Person training (Trenching/Confined Space)
• Traffic Control / Work Zone Safety training

Work Environment

This is a field-based position requiring regular travel to active road construction and paving jobsites. The Safety Coordinator must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and around heavy construction equipment, moving vehicles, asphalt operations, and active traffic.
