The Position

Job Appointment: Full-Time

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30 am-5 pm. An alternate schedule may be available.

Hybrid/work location: This role will report to The Portland Building 1120 SW 5th Avenue, Portland OR 97204 for In-person work. School site visits will be required.

The Safe Routes to School Coordinator plays a key role in making streets around schools safer and more accessible for students and families. This position leads and supports citywide efforts to align infrastructure investments, policies, and on-the-ground improvements that enhance school circulation. This work helps increase the number of students safely walking, biking, rolling, and taking transit for their school commute and around their neighborhoods; and reduces traffic fatalities and serious injuries. The Safe Routes to School Coordinator partners closely with internal teams, school districts, and school communities to implement safety projects, advance policy-aligned designs, and standardize safety treatments adjacent to schools.

The successful candidate is a member of the Safe Routes to School Section within the Mobility and Safety Programs (MSP) Division.

What you'll get to do:

• Coordinate Safe Routes to School circulation strategy by aligning infrastructure, policies, and safety treatments that improve school area conditions, including lower speeds and consistent countermeasures.
• Engage school districts, internal partners, and school community stakeholders to improve school area circulation safety through site observations, school access planning, and infrastructure installations, including pilot projects.
• Collaborate with internal team to refine the Safe Routes to School priority network and evaluate potential projects.
• Advance standardized approaches to school area safety, including mapping, updating and maintaining inventories, and process improvements.

About the Division:

The Mobility and Safety Programs (MSP) Division is located within PBOT's Policy, Planning and Projects group. The Division works to make streets safer and increase the number of people walking, bicycling, and taking transit; community-facing programs are central to this goal.

About Safe Routes to School

Our Safe Routes to School program focuses on helping kids and their families walk, bike, and roll to and from school and around their neighborhoods. We use infrastructure improvements, engagement, and education to improve safety, decrease congestion, reduce climate impacts, and encourage physical activity. The Safe Routes to School program supports over 100 schools within five school districts.

The Safe Routes to School team works closely with the Vision Zero team to advance a shared goal of creating a transportation system where everyone can travel safely. Itis Portlands goal to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets. Both programs use a Safe System Approach to traffic safety. This approach anticipates human mistakes through five layers of redundancy - safe speeds, safe streets, safe people, safe vehicles, and post-crash response - so human mistakes do not lead to serious injury or death. Vision Zero is Portlands goal to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets

Applicants must specifically address and demonstrate in their resume and supplemental question responses how their education, training and/or experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications:

• Experience planning and/or designing multimodal infrastructure projects.
• Experience applying effective project management including organizing, directing, motivating, and engaging stakeholders.
• Experience coordinating and communicating with diverse groups of stakeholders for program implementation such as, other government bureaus or agencies, school districts, nonprofit or community organizations, and members of the public.
• Knowledge of transportation demand management concepts and/or behavior change strategies in the context of non-driving modes such as bicycling, walking, transit, and rolling/scooting.
• Ability to engage with communities of color and people traditionally underrepresented in local decision-making; facilitate inclusive outreach and engagement; communicate cross-culturally.

Although not required, you may have one or more of the following:

• Ability to communicate in Spanish.
• Ability to create maps in GIS

This position is eligible for Language Pay Differential for qualifying employees.
