Title: Robotics Automation Engineer Location: Tucson, AZ 100% Onsite Duration: 12+ Months Job Description: We are seeking a
Robotics Automation Engineer to support research and early development projects involving
robotics, motion control, machine vision, and automation system integration.
The ideal candidate will be a hands-on engineer who can
design, prototype, integrate, test, and troubleshoot physical robotic systems. Strong experience with
motion control, machine vision-based robotic calibration, sensing, and robotics/physical AI is highly preferred.
Key Responsibilities- Design, build, integrate, and test robotics and automation prototypes.
- Develop and prototype mechanical, electrical, and software components for complex robotic systems.
- Integrate motion control systems, sensors, actuators, encoders, and robotic platforms.
- Apply machine vision for object detection, robot guidance, positioning, and calibration.
- Perform engineering simulations, experiments, testing, and analysis to validate system performance.
- Develop and evaluate new components, processes, and automation solutions for research applications.
- Troubleshoot and improve robotic systems based on testing, user feedback, and project requirements.
- Work with cross-functional Agile engineering teams to plan and execute R&D projects.
- Document technical results and present findings to engineering and cross-functional teams.
- Exercise independent technical judgment in developing solutions to complex engineering problems.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls, Automation Engineering, or related field.
- 8+ years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree, OR 4+ years with a Master's degree, OR 2+ years with a PhD.
- Strong knowledge of robotics/mechatronics, motion control, sensing, coordinate systems, and automation.
- Hands-on experience assembling, integrating, testing, and troubleshooting robotics/automation systems.
- Experience with mechanical, electrical, and software prototyping.
- Experience with servo/stepper motors, encoders, feedback systems, and motion control.
- Experience with machine vision for object detection, robot guidance, or calibration.
- Experience with PID control, PLCs, or industrial control systems.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently in an R&D environment.
Preferred Skills- ABB RobotStudio or other industrial robot software/programming platforms.
- SolidWorks or other CAD software.
- Machine-vision-based robotic calibration using fiducials, ArUco tags, AprilTags, or similar technologies.
- Industrial communication protocols including EtherCAT, PROFINET, PROFIBUS, RS-485, and TCP/IP.
- Industrial networking including switches, routers, and network infrastructure.
- Experience with diagnostic equipment, medical devices, or pathology laboratory automation is a plus.
- Exposure to robotics/physical AI and research-driven product development.
Ideal Candidate The strongest candidate will have
hands-on Robotics R&D experience with a proven background in:
Robotics Integration + Motion Control + Machine Vision + Robotic Calibration + Physical Prototyping Candidates who are primarily focused on
software development, PLC programming, CAD, or robotics simulation without hands-on physical robotics integration may not be a strong fit.
