Job Summary

The Supervisor, Surgical Services oversees daily operations of the Surgery and Central Sterile departments to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care. This role involves coordinating surgical schedules, supervising clinical and non-clinical staff, and managing resources effectively. The Supervisor collaborates with surgeons, nursing staff, and leadership to optimize workflows, maintain compliance with regulatory standards, and support the professional development of team members. This position serves as a resource and provides leadership in the absence of the Director or Assistant Director of Surgical Services.

Essential Functions

Acts as a liaison between physicians, charge nurses, and the surgical team to facilitate effective communication and coordination of care.

Keeps the Director and Assistant Director informed of departmental activities, personnel issues, and patient conditions, escalating concerns as necessary.

Conducts daily safety huddles, prepares statistical and productivity reports, and ensures efficient workflow in the Surgery and Central Sterile Departments.

Plans and coordinates the surgery schedule, considering physician availability, staff resources, and skill levels to ensure optimal operations.

Ensures accurate and thorough documentation of patient care, departmental activities, and compliance with regulatory standards.

Supports the orientation and onboarding of new employees, collaborating with OR Education to ensure staff receive appropriate training.

Delegates responsibilities within the scope of personnel abilities, ensuring tasks are completed effectively and efficiently.

Monitors the maintenance and availability of surgical instruments and equipment, working closely with the Central Sterile team to address any deficiencies.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Leadership Responsibilities

Supervision and Staff Management

Supervises, trains and oversees departmental staff.

Schedules employees to ensure effective use of resources. Consults with Manager or Director on staffing issues.

Assists with and contributes to performance evaluations and goal setting.

Strategic Planning and Financial Oversight

Assists in managing departmental budget ensuring cost-effective operations while maintain high quality service.

Monitors expenditures, ensuring cost-effective delivery of services.

May contribute to evaluation and implementation of new technologies to enhance operational efficiency.

May contribute to development of departmental policies, procedures and protocols.

Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance

Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies.

May participate in audits, inspections and accreditation processes as applicable.

Follows established quality control practices to ensure accuracy, consistency and safety.

Collaboration and Communication

Works closely with leadership teams to coordinate and improve service delivery.

Stays up-to-date with industry advancements, new technologies, and regulatory changes.

Staff Responsibilities

May work in a staff role, when required. Ensures that duties and responsibilities are fulfilled while meeting all competencies established for that job.

Qualifications

Associate Degree or higher preferred

1-2 years of related experience in the profession required

1-2 years of previous leadership experience preferred

Licenses and Certifications

RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure required

BCLS - Basic Life Support required

ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support required

CNOR - Certified Operating Room Nurse preferred
