Unit Notes
**MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 2 YEARS NICU EXPERIENCE**
STABLE IS NOT REQUIRED
**MUST HAVE LEVEL 2 NICU EXPERIENCE (level 3 is preferred)**
A pass/fail Sim Lab (re: foley catheter insertion) is required on Day 1 of orientation (study guides provided with first day instructions).
Radius Rule: 50 miles AND candidates may not be full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, including CHI and/or Dignity within the past 12 months
Unit Special Care Nursery (SCN)
# Beds 12 licensed SCN neonatal Beds.
# Births per day? Month? Year? we have 325 average deliveries a month, our average census in our Special Care nursery is 10
Ratios Typically 3:1, depending on acuity, 2:1
Required Certifications (i.e., BLS, ACLS?) NRP, BLS
Common diagnoses/Types of patients We are a Level II Special Care nursery we care for babies 32 weeks and above. We have patients on CPAP and High Flow, Feeder growers, R/S Sepsis, Hyperbili.
Experience or 'Must have' skills Minimum experience is level 2, prefer Level 3 NICU experience.
Are RNs required to titrate drips? They are not required to titrate drips
Common titratable &/or set rate drips n/a
Charge Nurse/House Supervisor? Does the charge nurse take an assignment? There is a Charge nurse in SCN that attends high risk deliveries and manages shift, she does not typically have an assignment but will have one low acuity patient on occasion.
Are there nurse aids/surgical techs on this unit? Yes, we have a PCT in this unit that is a HUC but also can assist RN with patient care for neonates.
OB/Neonatologist in house 24/7? Yes, we have NNPs in house 24/7, and Pediatrician coverage/oncall 24 hours.
RT Equipment (vents, Cpap, BiPap, etc) We are a Level II nursery so we care for patients that are >32 weeks GA, we do CPAP and High flow.
Are there Tele/Monitor Techs on this unit? Are RNs required to read their own strips? What brand are the tele monitors? There are not monitor techs on the unit. If a strip needs to be evaluated we would refer to the NNP/NEO or Cardiologist on call
Shifts & Scheduling (Do you allow self-scheduling? Block scheduling?) We do 12 hour shifts, for nights it is 7pm-0730am, Self scheduling
Weekend Requirements requirements are 3 weekend shifts per schedule (month) which are Friday or Saturdays and one Sunday.
Holiday Requirements one major and one minor holiday if falls within their assingment
Is there a call or standby requirement? No call requirements.
Floating Requirements? NICU travelers must float to our sister hospital Chandler Regional NICU.

Additional Notes SCN nurses start all of their own IVs, we do have a certified neonatal PICC team.
