5 West nurses are responsible for coordinating patient care as part of an inter-professional team. Nurses are required to be competent in the care of the newly diagnosed endocrine patient, and hematology, oncology, pre-, peri-, and post- transplant and cellular therapy patient including the administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy. Competency is established and maintained through an internal educational process. All registered nurses on 5 West must successfully complete and maintain the National APHON (Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses) Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Provider Course, the APHON BBMT (Blood & Bone Marrow Transplant) Core Curriculum, Hematology and Oncology 101, and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification within one (1) year of hire. Nurses are strongly encouraged to maintain or achieve their specialty certification: CPON (Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurse), or CPHON (Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse).
