    Job Preview

    The Retail Pharmacy Technician supports the daily operations of the HMC Pharmacy by assisting with the preparation, dispensing, and charging of medications and pharmaceutical supplies in accordance with established procedures and physician orders. All pharmacy technician duties are performed under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.

    The Pharmacy Technician works closely with pharmacists, nursing staff, patients, and other healthcare team members to provide accurate, timely, and courteous service while maintaining patient safety, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance.

    Schedule

    The HMC Pharmacy is open during the following hours:

    • Monday–Friday: 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

    • Saturday: 8:30 a.m.–12:00 p.m.

    • Sunday: Closed

    Employees may be scheduled within these operating hours based on pharmacy needs and staffing requirements.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Pharmacy Operations

    • Prepare the pharmacy for daily operations and opening.

    • Enter prescriptions and other medication orders into the pharmacy computer system accurately and promptly.

    • Fill prescriptions accurately and efficiently under the direction and supervision of the pharmacist.

    • Process customer purchases and collect payments accurately.

    • Provide courteous, professional, and friendly service to patients, visitors, and staff.

    • Ask patients whether they would like to speak with the pharmacist regarding medication information or counseling.

    • Assist with daily pharmacy workflow and other operational needs as directed by the pharmacist or Pharmacy Manager.

    Inventory and Supply Management

    • Place medication and pharmaceutical supply orders based on established inventory levels and pharmacy needs.

    • Receive, check in, and properly store medication and supply orders.

    • Monitor par levels and adjust inventory as appropriate based on usage and pharmacy needs.

    • Return medications or supplies when inventory levels are excessive or items are not being used regularly.

    • Check for expired medications and supplies on a routine basis.

    • Assist with inventory management and maintaining accurate inventory records.

    • Fill stock requisitions for medications and supplies requested by other departments.

    • Prepare requisitions for pharmacy supplies from the Central Supply Department.

    • Restock pharmacy supplies, including vials, bags, and other necessary materials.

    Auditing, Financial, and Administrative Duties

    • Complete daily pharmacy audit, narcotic audit, and charge-posting reports accurately.

    • Accurately prepare and complete the daily pharmacy deposit.

    • Transport mail to the Administration Building on a regular basis.

    • Assist with pharmacy documentation, reports, and other administrative responsibilities.

    • Maintain accurate and organized records.

    Quality Improvement and Teamwork

    • Assist with quality improvement initiatives and collection of data related to organizational pillar goals.

    • Make constructive recommendations for improving pharmacy services and workflow.

    • Assist the Pharmacy Manager with implementing new programs, processes, and initiatives.

    • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

    • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and all applicable HMC policies and procedures.

    • Perform other related duties as assigned or required.

    Required Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent required.

    • Familiarity with medical terminology required.

    • Basic computer skills required, with the ability to accurately enter and retrieve information.

    • Basic clerical and mathematical skills required.

    • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

    • Good written and verbal communication skills.

    • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.

    • Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a busy pharmacy environment.

    • Punctuality, dependability, and regular attendance are essential.

    • Ability and willingness to complete projects and responsibilities assigned by the Pharmacy Manager.

    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive patient and medication information appropriately.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Previous pharmacy technician or retail pharmacy experience preferred.

    • Experience working in a healthcare or hospital pharmacy setting preferred.

    • Familiarity with pharmacy computer systems preferred.

    • Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) preferred, if applicable to the position.

    • Occasionally (11–33% of the time): Sitting, reaching above shoulder level, bending or positioning the neck, and lifting or carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.

    • Ability to safely perform repetitive tasks associated with prescription processing, computer entry, stocking, and inventory management.

    • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, pharmacists, nursing staff, and other healthcare personnel.

    • Vision and hearing sufficient to perform essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.

    Work Environment

    Work is performed primarily in a retail pharmacy environment within Hopedale Medical Complex. The employee will have regular interaction with patients, visitors, pharmacists, nursing staff, physicians, and other HMC employees. The position requires attention to detail, accuracy, confidentiality, and the ability to work effectively in an environment where priorities may change throughout the day.

    The employee may have exposure to medications, pharmaceutical products, cleaning products, and other materials commonly present in a pharmacy environment. All applicable safety, infection prevention, and personal protective equipment requirements must be followed.

    Background Check and Drug Screen

    All HMC employees are required to successfully complete applicable federal and state background checks and a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

    HMC's drug screening process includes testing for substances prohibited under HMC policy, including cannabis (THC), consistent with applicable law and organizational requirements.
