Supervisory Responsibilities

The Retail Assistant Manager provides direct supervisory oversight, in coordination with the General Manager, for the following retail roles:

  • Retail Hosts / Hostesses
  • Retail Operations Leads
  • Retail Inventory Operations Leads
  • Retail Security Supervisors

Supervisory responsibilities include hiring, training, scheduling, performance management, corrective action, and day-to-day leadership in accordance with company policy and applicable law.

Reporting Structure and Functional Alignment

  • General Manager > Field Operations Manager > Regional Director of Retail > Vice President of Growth

Position Summary

The Retail Assistant Manager supports the General Manager in leading and managing daily operations of a high-volume cannabis retail store and associated delivery operations. This role provides operational leadership, oversight, and accountability for store performance, compliance, customer experience, and team execution. The Retail Assistant Manager supervises retail operations, inventory, and security staff, collaborates cross-functionally, and helps ensure efficient, compliant, and profitable retail operations in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Financial and Operational Leadership

  • Support execution of company strategy and operational priorities as directed by the General Manager and senior leadership.
  • Assist in ensuring retail operations meet financial objectives, including revenue, profit, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Oversee day-to-day store performance, including sales execution, cash management, inventory control, security operations, deliveries, returns, and reconciliations.
  • Partner with Marketing and Purchasing teams to execute promotions and optimize product mix.
  • Assist with financial and compliance audits and ensure corrective actions are implemented as needed.

Team Leadership and Supervision

  • Directly supervise Retail Hosts, Retail Operations Leads, Retail Inventory Operations Leads, and Retail Security Supervisors in coordination with the General Manager.
  • Lead performance management processes, including coaching, evaluations, corrective action, and documentation in collaboration with HR and the General Manager.
  • Support recruiting, hiring, onboarding, training, and development of retail staff.
  • Foster a positive, professional, and compliant work environment aligned with company values.
  • Conduct regular meetings with team members to address operational challenges and performance expectations.

Customer Experience and Brand Leadership

  • Ensure store teams deliver a consistent, compliant, and high-quality customer experience.
  • Address customer feedback and assist with implementation of improvements to service and operational processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners to support brand standards, merchandising, and marketing initiatives.
  • Represent the company with professionalism and integrity in the community and workplace.

Compliance and Risk Management

  • Support full compliance with all federal, state, and local cannabis regulations and company policies.
  • Oversee cash handling controls, inventory accuracy, and security protocols.
  • Identify and escalate operational, compliance, safety, and security risks.
  • Stay current on regulatory changes, industry trends, and best practices.

Leadership and Continuous Improvement

  • Use data, KPIs, and operational metrics to support informed decision-making.
  • Assist with change initiatives and process improvements to enhance efficiency and performance.
  • Demonstrate accountability, adaptability, and sound judgment in managing store operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position operates in a retail dispensary environment where cannabis products are present and may involve exposure to marijuana odor and plant-related airborne particles.

Physical requirements may include standing, walking, bending, lifting, carrying, climbing, twisting, and repetitive motions. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds (up to 100 pounds with assistance). Regular computer and keyboard use is required.

Schedule and Travel

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Periodic overnight travel may be required.

Compliance and Continuing Eligibility

Employment is contingent upon ongoing compliance with cannabis regulations, company policies, and the maintenance of all required licenses, permits, and work cards. Loss of eligibility may affect continued employment.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Marijuana Establishment Agent Registration Card and any required local or jurisdictional work cards.
  • Minimum one (1) year of retail management or supervisory experience in a fast-paced, compliance-driven environment preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading teams and supporting operational KPIs.
  • Working knowledge of retail financials, cash controls, and operational metrics.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to pass all required background checks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, retail management, or a related field.
  • Experience in high-volume or multi-location retail environments.
  • Knowledge of cannabis products, terminology, and regulatory requirements.
  • OSHA 30 certification or equivalent safety training.
