Residential Assistant/Tutor-Mentor for Upward Bound

Summer Academy 2026

  • Assist the Residential Coordinator (RC) with supervision of Upward Bound participants throughout the 5-week Summer Academy: 4 weeks of high school participants living residentially and 1 week of virtual activities.
  • Duties are assigned and may include student check-in/check-out, lights out, wake-up calls, supervision of meals, supervision of in-person classes, supervision of virtual meetings, supervision of free time, duty phone, nightly in-person programming meetings, and serving daily needs of students.
  • Provide tutoring (as needed) and peer advisement to participants.
  • Live in residence halls to be present as needed for supervision of minors and lead a core team of students for mentorship.
  • Facilitate living and learning environment in the residence hall.
  • Create an environment which promotes intellectual, academic, social, and emotional growth.
  • Foster social interactions when present on campus and learning environments online.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Director, Coordinator, RC, and other residential staff regarding the progress of participants.
  • Participate in all in-service training and staff meetings.
  • Report to the RC.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to the duties stated above, summer staff has the following responsibilities:

  • Serve as a positive role model and effectively confront inappropriate and negative behaviors.
  • Dress appropriately while residents are present.
  • Act as a positive and professional Upward Bound representative at all times.
  • Never discuss private lives such as parties, sex, drinking, etc.
  • Actively confront and document participants who do not follow Upward Bound rules.
  • Maintain appropriate relationships with students and never spend time with residents off the job.
  • Under no circumstances is a student to spend the night with staff on or off campus.
  • Never allow students in personal vehicles nor give them a ride.

All applicants are subject to a background check. Dates of the residential program are May 31st through July 2nd. Staff must reside on campus during this time. Students will be virtual for one week of the 5 (dates TBD); however, room and board is provided for all residential staff throughout the full Summer I term, if needed.
