The Resident Director, in conjunction with the entire Residential Education and Services staff, aids in the development of a strong residential community and promotes student academic and social success, student wellness, student leadership, student spiritual development, and diversity awareness, both as part of the Student Life Team and in the management and administration of their assigned residence hall. This is a full-time, 12-month position. Although the majority of the position will function as described in the job description and performance programs, some aspects are subject to change due to evolving departmental needs. All activities coming from this position are to make a significant contribution to the fulfillment of the mission of the university.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each of the below duties satisfactorily:
Residence Life Specialties:
- Manage all Housing Exceptions, including the forms, meetings, decision letters, and communication.
- Manage Residential dorm closedowns process, including forms.
- Distribute all housing fines, judicial fines, & closedown fines in Banner system.
- Set up Resident Assistant hiring.
- Set up Summer Resident Assistant hiring.
- Point person for all RES Life “Involvement Fair” opportunities.
- Manage & maintain Housing Handbook updates.
- Manage and help create “All RES” events, such as:
- Deck the Halls
- Battle of the HALLidays (Thanksgiving)
- Spring BBQ
- Valentine’s event
- Support Commuter Outreach initiatives in partnership with the Center for Student Leadership & Development (CSLD)
Student Staff Support:
- Select, train, supervise, and evaluate up to 8 Resident Assistants.
- Assist in the annual RA recruitment and selection process.
- Assist in the provision of fall training as well as in-service training throughout the academic year.
- Foster unity and teamwork through training, weekly meetings, and personal contact with the RA staff.
- Regularly meet with RA’s for one-on-ones and staff meetings.
Community Management & Relationships:
- Provide daytime, evening and weekend on-call coverage, including holidays, for emergency response to residence hall incidents in rotation with other Resident Directors. While on duty, be within 15 minutes of campus to respond to crisis and emergency situations.
- Interpret and apply University and Residential Education and Services policies.
- Serve as one of the student conduct hearing officers for the department.
- Hold RA’s accountable for periodic health and safety room checks and daily duty rounds.
- Assist with Housing Services needs, including the preparation of the buildings for move-in and move-out, and communication of building service requests.
- Be a part of the student life team and help coordinate sstudent life events and new initiatives
Emergency Response:
- Intervene and counsel residents on behavioral, emotional, health, and safety issues and make appropriate referrals to on- and off-campus entities.
- Intervene, counsel, and advise students in personal conflicts.
- Serve as contact and/or mediator for roommate conflicts, advise students on room change and contract cancellation policies and procedures, and facilitate roommate/apartment changes in conjunction with the Coordinator of Housing Services.
- Counsel individuals and/or groups regarding personal and/or academic needs and university policy.
Administration:
- Serve on the Residential Education and Services management team and attend weekly meetings.
- Attend monthly University staff and Student Affairs Division meetings and Student Affairs staff retreats.
- Meet 1-1 bi-weekly with supervisor.
- Participate in various intra- and interdepartmental and campus committees and work groups.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Other Responsibilities:
- Active member of Student Affairs Staff.
- Serve as a member on the Equity & Grievance team.
- Assess program activity based on SLO standards and desired departmental outcomes.
- Other duties as assigned.
Pay Range: $70,304 per year
