Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

This position is a technician in the Department of Plant Biology, University of Georgia, Athens to aid in research of genome engineering and plant-microbe synthetic biology in the Grome lab, and to assist in day-to-day lab managerialtasks.

Highly detail-oriented, organized, and willing to work as part of a team, as this position will include keeping track of multiple projects, people, and organismalsystems.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

The candidate will assist the PI, graduate students, and other trainees with performing experiments in plant biology, microbiology, molecular biology, andsynthetic biology. General protocols will include:

  • preparing chemical reagents
  • designing bacterial and eukaryotic expression constructs
  • plasmid assembly and cloning
  • assembling/purifying DNA for genomic, amplicon, and plasmid sequencing
  • transforming plants & microbes with constructs
  • tissue culturing of engineered plants
  • collecting/analyzing genomic, protein, & metabolomic samples
  • if the candidate desires, there could be opportunities to write and publishpeer-reviewed manuscripts.

Percentage of time 60 Duties/Responsibilities

The candidate will perform basic laboratory support functions including:

  • routine preparation of growth media,
  • maintaining algal cultures,
  • setup/maintenance of research equipment,
  • washing dishes and operating autoclave,
  • maintaining general lab cleanliness/organization.

Percentage of time 30 Duties/Responsibilities

The candidate will assist with routine ordering of laboratory supplies and assist the supervisor in administrative tasks, including shipping and receiving.
