Duties Description The Wadsworth Center's Division of Environmental Health Sciences (DEHS) is comprised of organic, inorganic and microbiological laboratories where skilled staff are relied upon to analyze environmental samples and human specimens, to identify and quantitate chemical contaminants that are known or suspected to be hazardous to public health. This position will support the Environmental Trace Elements Program, provide analytical capacity for lead testing by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), and support the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and FDA Food Defense activities. These efforts support childhood lead poisoning prevention, food safety, consumer product testing, and emerging contaminants testing.
Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive: bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences and two years of post-degree professional research experience* in an appropriate field.
Preferred Qualifications: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in chemistry with research and/or work experience in Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) following microwave-assisted digestion of solid matrices and/or X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry.
Additional Comments Dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may be required. Additionally, exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position; the selected candidate may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations.
