A Brief Overview

This role participates in a planned research projects by performing research protocols. Works independently and self-directed while providing guidance and technical training to other lab staff. Possesses a specialized education in the biological or chemical sciences and is required to exercise appropriate situational discretion and sound scientific judgement in execution / interpretation of experiments, and interpretation of data derived.

This role is well suited for a researcher who enjoys human stem cell culture (hESCs and iPSCs), their modification with fluorescent reporters of synaptic activity, and their differentiation into excitatory and inhibitory neurons, astrocytes, blood brain barrier endothelium, and especially brain macrophages/microglia. The researcher should also enjoy applying that expertise to biologically and clinically relevant questions--with emphasis on neurodevelopmental disorders such as intellectual disability, autism, and schizophrenia. The successful candidate will have opportunities to build advanced skills in cell culture, immunofluorescence, microscopy, disease modeling, and collaborative research while contributing directly to projects with the potential to uncover disease mechanisms and identify therapeutic strategies.

What you will do

• Maintain, propagate, and QC check human embryonic stem cell and induced pluripotent stem cell lines.
• Modify lines the select for stable integrants of fluorescent reporters for synaptic imaging.
• Help design and perform assays to study various mutational and environmental influences on microglial function, including in mixed differentiations with human neurons and astrocytes and including xenotransplantations into genetically modified mice.
• Support transcriptomic and genomics studies, including RNA-sequencing sample preparation, data organization, and coordination with genomics and bioinformatics cores.
• Analyze results, troubleshoot experiments, prepare figures and presentations, and contribute to manuscripts.
• Collaborate with researchers working in neuronal differentiations, the CHOP Omics Initiative, institutional core facilities, and other project partners while supporting general laboratory operations and student training.
• Performs lab tests which require the analysis of results and interpretation of methods
• Assists with planning specific research protocols and procedures
• Assists in development & troubleshooting of new techniques and ideas
• Modifies methods and protocols under the direction of the PI
• Formulates and performs complex lab experiments, analyzes data & reports outcomes
• Presents & discusses work at regular lab meetings
• Prepares laboratory reagents and monitors and maintains inventory
• Performs calculations and maintains appropriate log books and lab notebooks
• Assists in writing methods and setting-up protocols accurately under the direction of the PI program director or senior scientist
• Assists with the maintenance of laboratory equipment, development of safety procedures and compliance records
• Researches journals, white papers and other scientific publications for pertinent information
• Assists with the preparation of materials for presentations, papers, grant applications, and conferences
• May oversee junior staff and/or laboratory workflow.
• May assist with lab administrative functions.

Education Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree Required

Experience Qualifications

• At least three (3) years of directly relevant post grad scientific lab experience Required
• At least five (5) years of directly relevant post grad scientific lab experience Preferred

SALARY RANGE:

$58,300.00 - $72,900.00 Annually

Salary ranges are shown for full-time jobs. If you're working part-time, your pay will be adjusted accordingly.
