The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications Position Summary

The primary purpose and function of the Veterinary Technician is to support veterinarians in teaching veterinary students clinical skills including technical skills and animal care.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Be familiar with all basic clinical skills for all four species: E.g. collecting blood and other specimens, inserting catheters, administration of medications,

Be familiar with basic anesthetic techniques including intubation, and maintenance.

Surgical assistance: be familiar with instruments, all aspects of sterile technique, surgical scrubbing (patient and surgeon)

Euthanasia.

Physical Demands

Lift 50lb.

Sit, stand, stoop, bend, and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.

Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.

Wear protective clothing including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles etc.

Driving as needed to perform job tasks.

Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

Teaching veterinary students various clinical skills; this includes but is not limited to basic clinical skills in addition to assisting with teaching more complex skills; work with Director of Clinical Skills Lab and other technicians to teach the course.

Percentage of time 35 Duties/Responsibilities

Organizing laboratories and ordering supplies, maintenance and care of laboratory equipment and instruments, regular cleaning and stocking of work areas.

Percentage of time 30 Duties/Responsibilities

Creating and demonstrating clinical skills models and management and coordination of the professional skills communication class with the Department of Theatre and Film Studies.

Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities

Assisting with clinical research projects , maintain accurate records with research projects; work with multiple investigators, order and maintain supplies for various research projects.

Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities

Other tasks as assigned; each technician will participate in the completion of daily chores list.

Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities

Animal care including daily monitoring of physical health/well-being, administering treatments, feeding and maintaining living spaces.
