Respiratory care guidelines are based on the AARC Code of Ethics (1), Indiana Respiratory Care Practice Act (2), and regulatory agency along with evidenced based standards by which the Registered Respiratory Therapist provides patient care. Essential Responsibilities:
1. Assessment
a. Performs comprehensive agespecificassessments andre-assessments.
b. Collaborateswithsignificantothers, family members, or otherhealthcare providerstoobtaincompletemedicalhistory. Documentsassessmentfindingsaccordingtounitpolicy.
2. Diagnosis
a. Identifiesactualorpotentialphysical,psychosocial,cultural,andreligious,safety,infectioncontrol, and environmentaland/orteachingneeds.
b. Prioritizespatientcareaccordingtoassessmentfindings.
c. Interpretsassessmentfindingsandpreparespatient/family care and educationaccordingly.
3. Planning/Outcome
a. Collaborateswithotherhealthcareprovidersregardingtheplanofcareanddischarge/transferplans
b. Develops an individualizedplan of care/education based onstandardsofcare/standardsofpracticetoachieveoptimaloutcomes.
c. Revisesplan of care based on patientphysicalandemotionalchangesand/orneeds.
d. Revisesplan of care based on patient, family andsignificantothersinput.
4. Implementation
a. Providesagespecificpatientcarebased on plan of care,patientneeds,andpriorities.
b. Utilizesevidence-basedinterventionsandtreatmentsspecifictothediagnosis or problem.
c. Utilizescommunityresourcesandsystemstoimplement the plan of care and coordinatesaccesstotheappropriateresources.
d. Collaborateswith other caregivers toimplementtheplan of care.
5. Evaluation
a. Evaluates the effectivenessof respiratory careinterventions.
b. Evaluatespatientresponseinrelationtoexpectedoutcomes.
c. Evaluatespatientresponsetootherhealthcareproviderinterventions.
d. Revisesplan of care based on evaluations of respiratory careinterventions/treatments.
e. Evaluatespatient/significantotherresponsetoteaching.
Education and Experience Required:
1. Graduate of a CoARC approved respiratory therapy education program.
2. Associate Degree, or equivalent education, required. Bachelor Degree preferred.
Mandatory Licensure/Certifications:
1. Credentialed and maintains active status as a Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
2. Licensedby theIndianaState Health Professions BureauasanactiveRespiratory Care Provider (RCP).
