Job Description

Hilo Benioff Medical Center is seeking a dedicated Registered Professional Nurse III to join our Ambulatory Surgery Services team, which includes Short Stay (SS), Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and Gastro Lab. In this role, you will provide comprehensive perioperative and procedural nursing care, support patients throughout the pre- and post-anesthesia process, and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, high-quality outcomes. This position requires flexibility to work varying shifts, weekends, holidays, and standby call as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide direct nursing care to surgical and procedural patients in the preoperative, postoperative, PACU, and Gastro Lab settings, utilizing the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care.
  • Prepare procedural areas with appropriate equipment and supplies and coordinate patient care throughout the perioperative and recovery phases.
  • Monitor patient conditions, administer medications, carry out physician orders, and respond effectively to emergencies and changes in patient status.
  • Educate patients and families regarding procedures, recovery expectations, discharge instructions, and ongoing care needs.
  • Maintain patient safety and infection prevention standards while ensuring equipment readiness and adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a resource and leader for team members, including supervising support staff, mentoring new employees, and assuming Charge Nurse responsibilities as delegated.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Experience

  • Six (6) months of professional nursing experience providing independent patient care in a clinic, hospital, or institutional setting.
  • One (1) year of inpatient or outpatient surgical experience preferred.

Certification

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within one (1) month of employment.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications required within six (6) months of employment or transfer into the department.

Licensure

  • Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Hawaii.

Pre-Employment Health Requirements

Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen.  The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
