Direct Hire | Full-Time | Night Shift | 3x12s

A leading healthcare organization in Bloomington, Illinois is seeking an experienced PCU / Stepdown Registered Nurse to join its inpatient acute care team. This is an excellent opportunity for an RN who enjoys caring for higher-acuity patients in a collaborative environment with strong nurse-to-patient ratios and exposure to medical, surgical, cardiac, respiratory, and neurological conditions.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable with telemetry interpretation and chest tubes and have experience caring for patients with complex medical needs.

Position Overview

 

The PCU/Stepdown RN provides comprehensive nursing care to patients requiring a higher level of monitoring and clinical intervention than a traditional medical-surgical floor.

 

This 32-bed unit cares for a diverse patient population, including medical, surgical, cardiac, respiratory, and neurological patients. Nurses manage patients requiring telemetry and advanced therapies such as BiPAP, CPAP, tracheostomies, chest tubes, central lines, and other complex interventions.

 

Compensation & Incentives

  • Hourly Pay: $34.25–$51.13/hr
  • Sign-On Bonus: $20,000 with 1+ year of experience
  • Night Differential: +$4.00/hr
  • Weekend Differential: +$3.25/hr

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to patients with complex medical needs
  • Interpret and monitor cardiac telemetry
  • Care for patients with chest tubes and other advanced medical devices
  • Monitor patients for changes in condition and respond appropriately
  • Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders and nursing standards
  • Collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary care teams
  • Provide patient and family education
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in EPIC
  • Safely manage patients requiring higher-acuity interventions
  • Float to ICU when appropriate based on experience; otherwise, float to General Medicine floors
  • Take patient assignments appropriate to the level of care when floating

The unit cares for patients with a broad range of medical, surgical, cardiac, respiratory, and neurological conditions, including:

  • COPD
  • CHF
  • Diabetes
  • Sepsis
  • Renal conditions
  • DKA
  • Alcohol withdrawal
  • Overdoses
  • Pneumonia
  • Other respiratory conditions
  • Neurological conditions
  • Surgical patients
  • Cardiac patients
  • Post-ablation and post-cath lab patients
  • Dialysis patients

Advanced Skills & Patient Care

Nurses may care for patients requiring:

  • BiPAP / CPAP
  • Tracheostomies
  • Chest tubes
  • NG tubes
  • PICC lines
  • Central lines
  • Telemetry monitoring
  • Post-ablation care
  • Post-cath lab care
  • Dialysis

Requirements

Experience & Skills

  • 1+ year of RN experience for sign-on bonus eligibility
  • Must be able to read and interpret cardiac telemetry
  • Must be comfortable caring for patients with chest tubes
  • Experience in PCU, stepdown, intermediate care, telemetry, or another higher-acuity inpatient setting is highly valuable

Licensure & Certifications

  • Active RN license
  • BLS required
  • ACLS required
  • NIHSS required

Unit & Facility Details

  • 32-bed inpatient acute care unit
  • All private rooms
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 3–4 patients per nurse
  • EPIC electronic medical record
  • Pyxis medication dispensing system
  • Any-color scrubs permitted
  • Orientation includes:
  • 1 day with the education team
  • 1 day of floor orientation

Floating Expectations

  • Nurses with extensive ICU experience may float to the ICU
  • Nurses without extensive ICU experience may float to General Medicine floors
  • Assignments are based on the nurse's experience and the level of care:
  • ICU: 2 patients
  • General Medicine: 5–6 patients

Schedule

  • Night Shift
  • Three 12-hour shifts per week
  • 3x12s
  • Rotating nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Weekend and holiday rotation required
