Job Description
Performs professional nursing services as defined by the American Nurses Association and the California Nurse Practice Act. Possesses skills to act both as a clinical leader and resource nurse, as well as an administrative leader assuming 24 hour responsibility for the functioning of the unit. Supervises both licensed and unlicensed nursing staff. Oversees daily nursing practice on an assigned unit to ensure that safe and appropriate care is provided and is responsible for overall management of the unit during all shifts. Collaborates actively with medical, administrative and interdisciplinary leadership staff to ensure optimal patient care outcomes. Participates in the preparation and ongoing monitoring and control of fiscal resources.
Performs a variety of functions related to the management of department personnel in compliance with organizational and human resources policies and procedures
Interviews, hires, and recommends termination of employees in accordance with Human Resources policies and procedures and in consultation with the Director.
Communicates job duties to staff in a clear, understandable, and concise manner; plans, directs, and supervises work of assigned staff utilizing positive communications and effective problem solving skills.
Provides consistent input on performance in consultation with Director; to include initial planning/review session, annual performance appraisal, and counseling, if necessary, based on defined criteria and in compliance with Human Resources policies and procedures.
Consults in a timely manner with Director regarding staff performance, problems or concerns which may affect efficient and effective department operations, and hospital-wide issues which may have a direct or indirect effect on department morale.
Delegates appropriate responsibility and authority to staff according to relevant job descriptions and individual capabilities.
Evaluates department staffing/scheduling requirements, taking into account requests for holiday/vacation time; recommends appropriate use of per diem staff.
Coordinates new employee orientation to department within established timeframes.
Acts as a resource to staff; assesses the need for, plans, and coordinates priority educational offerings and skills training for staff.
Performs a variety of administrative functions to coordinate, supervise, and monitor department operations under the direction of the Director
Communicates in an appropriate and timely manner with Director; seeks input, provides accurate information and makes recommendations for policy and/or practice change.
Monitors, controls, evaluates and reports departmental expenditures for salary, equipment and supplies; reports over/under budget variances and recommends control measures within established timeframes.
Develops annual department operating and capital budget requests with justification and within established timelines.
Works effectively as a member of the Management Team to accomplish hospital organizational goals, develop a strategic plan, develop a positive working relationships with the medical staff, and to develop positive interdepartmental communications regarding department programs and services.
Develops and implements a department Performance Improvement Program in compliance with The Joint Commission standards for hospital accreditation.
Maintains inventory of supplies required to provide services; assures completion of appropriate requisition forms; reviews all purchase requisitions for accuracy and appropriateness prior to approval; consults with Director as specified.
Conducts regularly scheduled staff meetings to explain administrative and department policies, improve communications, to identify and propose resolution of problems and to plan future activities.
Coordinates the implementation of the department volunteer programs in support of Volunteer Services and in compliance with the department volunteer policy and procedure.
Develops, reviews, and revises department policies and procedures, and job descriptions in compliance with regulatory and hospital standards. Ensures medication-related Patient Care Services Policies are consistent, if applicable.
Leadership
Plans safe and efficient nursing care while ensuring optimal patient care by all member of the team.
Coordinates all aspects of patient care provided by a multidisciplinary team.
Accountable for assuring all emergency equipment is available for immediate use and is in working order.
Responsible for assessing patient acuity. Structures staffing and nurses to patient assignments based on patient acuity and classification and assures that staffing is in compliance with any and all Federal/State regulations.
Demonstrates leadership and management skills to provide direction and a sense of purpose to departmental staff.
Utilizes problem solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem, identifies the resources available to help solve the problem, creates and implements viable solutions, and follows through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.
Demonstrates decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached.
Possesses ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, or under tight deadlines, or when dealing with challenging customers.
Recommends changes to policies, procedures, and department environment to enhance the department’s ability to provide optimum service to all clients.
Evaluates and takes action to assure clinical competency of nursing staff.
Structures staffing and nurse to patient assignments based on patient acuity and classification.

Attends and actively participates in designated Hospital and departmental meetings and training classes.
Follows safety procedures, operates equipment and performs job-related duties in a safe manner which prevents accidents/injuries from occurring to self or others.
Ensures that routine and priority tasks are completed within established timelines.
Adhere to SHCNC attendance/tardiness policy (i.e. reports to work on time, uses paid leave times appropriately, etc.).

BSN Required
MSN Preferred
2 Years Supervisory or Health Related Management Experience – Preferred.
Additional Experience Information
Pediatric Experience Preferred.
RN license in state of practice – Required.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – Required.
BLS – Required.
Have knowledge and comply with Title 22, OSHA, The Joint Commission requirements, and the SHCNC Mission.
Provide leadership and supervision.
Assess patient care data and formulate appropriate nursing diagnoses.
Supervise or carry out clinical skills related to pediatric, burn, orthopedic and rehabilitation nursing.
Function effectively in a multicultural patient / family / staff environment.
Practice standard precautions.
Communicate effectively in oral and written form.
Adapt to changing patient care environment, including unscheduled admissions and emergency situations.
Utilize performance improvement and research processes.

The pay range for this position is $90.08 - $127.17/hour.
Compensation is determined based on years of relevant experience and departmental equity.
