    Job Summary:

    The ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice are exemplified within this Job Description.  The Nurse is responsible for utilizing the Nursing Process to provide nursing care for the patient throughout their life span. Assumes responsibility for the outcome of nursing care delivered on their shift.

    The Charge RN acts as a front line supervisor and clinical resource for the department. Demonstrates clinical expertise and assists and mentors nursing personnel on the unit, in patient planning and overall patient care management on a shift by shift basis.  Provides direction to staff to facilitate meeting patient outcomes and coordinates staff assignments and duties, assists with completing the monthly staffing schedule for the unit.

    Essential Job Functions:

    • Demonstrates ability to perform all essential job functions of Registered Nurse.

    • Demonstrates ability to plan, direct, and coordinate the work flow of the unit.

    • Monitors patient care and unit processes to assure safe, customer-focused approach.

    • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships with individuals, groups, and community.

    • Maintains a high level of clinical competency and projects high standards of performance expectations from personnel on the unit.

    • Shares knowledge with staff and serves as a role model.  Maintains clinical skills as required.

    • Assures implementation and compliance of current policies and procedures.

    • Reviews patient plan of care with direct caregivers to offer suggestions/interventions to enhance efficiency and quality of care.

    • Coordinates and maintains appropriate staffing levels to maximize department efficiency and provide for safe, optimal patient care.

    • Coordinates the flow of patients transferring in and out of the unit

    • Communicates the staffing needs of the unit and bed availability.

    • Assists with the collection and maintenance of Performance Improvement Tools as needed.

    • Conducts or participates in interdisciplinary rounds as appropriate.

    • Communicates with physicians, families, community agencies, social services, home care, and other disciplines.

    • Facilitates resolution of physician/family concerns and reports to proper management as necessary.

    Certifications:

    Certification Requirements for Position:

    þ BLS (Basic Life Support)

    þ ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)

    þ PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support

    o  NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)

    þ  TNCC (Trauma Nurse Core Course)

    Experience: 

    Minimum one year nursing experience required prior to charge nurse role.

    Assumes responsibility and accountability for safety, service, and delivery of nursing care provided on the unit.  Responsible for utilizing the nursing process to provide nursing care for a specific group of patients.  Individually responsible for maintaining and updating professional practice.     Generally works, 12 hrs., day/night and weekend rotation.
