Location: Charlotte, NC

  • Position Type: Contract
  • Contract Duration: 3 months (hard stop)
  • Pay Rate: $57.00 / Hour (USD)
  • Shift / Schedule: 12-Hour Nights; 18:45 07:15 (3x12 Hours); Every Other Weekend required

Job Summary

This is a travel/contract Registered Nurse position in the Neuro ICU at a Comprehensive Stroke Center. The unit serves a high-acuity patient population with a primary focus on stroke patients (ischemic, hemorrhagic [SAH]), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents, carotid endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis. Drains used on the unit include EVDs, LDs, hemovacs, and Camino (ICP monitoring). The unit operates with a 2:1 nurse-to-patient ratio, which can flex up to 3:1 during high census, and candidates must be comfortable with this if needed. The average daily census is 11 12 patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct nursing care to high-acuity Neuro ICU patients including those with stroke (ischemic, hemorrhagic [SAH]), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents, carotid endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis
  • Manage ventilated patients including care of the ventilated patient and ventilator management
  • Perform IV starts and manage continuous IV sedation
  • Administer blood products per protocol
  • Manage central lines including central line care and management
  • Monitor and manage intracranial pressure (ICP) via ICP monitoring devices
  • Manage external ventricular drains (EVD) and lumbar drains
  • Perform CVA/Acute Stroke management as a core unit function
  • Interpret and manage dysrhythmias
  • Implement isolation precautions and use of PPE
  • Float per unit requirements as needed
  • Complete unit orientation (24.0 hours; 2 days or 2 nights)
  • Follow scheduling per unit needs, including every other weekend assignment
  • Adhere strictly to RTO policy: no RTO after booking and no working out onsite; call-offs or additional RTO on unit may result in contract cancellation and DNR

  • Comfort with 2:1 patient ratios flexing up to 3:1 in high census situations

Preferred Skills

  • Arterial line management

Education Requirements

  • ACLS certification required
  • BCLS certification required
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIH) certification required
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license required

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Neuro ICU REQUIRED; strong Neuro Critical Care background, not just general ICU
  • First-time travelers will NOT be accepted; prior traveler experience required

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • Night shift: 12-hour nights, 18:45 07:15
  • Every other weekend requirement
  • Float requirement: YES
  • Call requirement: NONE
  • Scheduling type: per unit needs
  • Scrubs: Navy blue and White
  • Flu vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions only)
  • No call-off requirement; however, call-offs or additional RTO may result in contract cancellation and DNR
  • RTO after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite

Important Notes

  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start for this specialty
  • Candidate must have a minimum of 2 years of Neuro ICU experience if not, please do not submit
  • Strong Neuro Critical Care background required general ICU background alone is not sufficient for this unit
  • Unit will NOT accept first-time travelers
  • RTO after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite; any call-offs or additional RTO on unit could result in a contract cancellation and DNR (Do Not Rehire)
  • RTO maximum: 7 days for AYA Auto Offer
  • Stroke patients are one of the largest patient populations on this unit
  • Unit orientation: 24.0 hours (2 days or 2 nights)
