Job Summary

This is a Labor and Delivery travel nursing position on a high-acuity, fast-paced Birthing Care Unit. The unit averages more than 300 births per month, approximately 20 births in a 24-hour period, and 30 40 admits and 40 visits per day across 20 rooms. Double labor assignments are a daily occurrence on the unit. The unit cares for obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater for all intrapartum and for high-risk antepartum and postpartum care, and also cares for under-16-weeks high-risk patients on its high-risk maternity unit. The Birthing Care Unit includes an obstetrical triage unit to allow for screening of patients prior to admission and to perform routine outpatient procedures such as antenatal fetal surveillance, intravenous hydration, and medication administration. Scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean Births and rescue cervical cerclage are performed on this unit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide intrapartum, antepartum, and postpartum nursing care for obstetrical patients 16 weeks and greater, as well as high-risk patients under 16 weeks on the high-risk maternity unit.
  • Manage double labor assignments, which are a daily occurrence on the unit.
  • Perform sterile vaginal exams and provide immediate newborn care.
  • Circulate to the OR as required; candidates with circulate-to-OR experience are strongly preferred.
  • Perform and support routine outpatient procedures including antenatal fetal surveillance, intravenous hydration, and medication administration in the obstetrical triage unit.
  • Screen patients prior to admission through the obstetrical triage unit.
  • Assist with scheduled and unscheduled Cesarean Births and rescue cervical cerclage.
  • Float as needed to the Special Maternity Care high-risk OB unit.
  • Utilize unit systems: PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery experience required to be comfortable working on this unit; 3 years preferred due to the challenging nature of the environment.
  • Must have experience in a high-volume setting with more than 300 births per month.
  • Experience in a large, high-volume similar setting required for first-time travelers.
  • Ability to circulate to OR.
  • Proficiency in sterile vaginal exam.
  • Competency in immediate newborn care.
  • Proficiency with PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR systems.

Education Requirements

  • BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
  • AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certification required.
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification required.
  • Flu vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions only).

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of Labor and Delivery RN experience; 3 years strongly preferred.
  • Must have experience in a high-volume Labor and Delivery setting with greater than 300 births per month.
  • First-time travelers accepted, but must have experience in a large/high-volume similar setting.

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

  • DIFFICULT UNIT / FAST PACED busier and higher acuity than might be normally expected.
  • Double labor assignments are a daily occurrence on the unit.
  • Patient ratios: 2:1; average 20 births in 24 hours; 30 40 admits and 40 visits per day; 20 rooms.
  • Float required as needed to Special Maternity Care high-risk OB unit.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend; minimum of 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule.
  • Call requirement: None.
  • Unit will accept 13 26 week contracts.
  • RTO: 7 days maximum for AYA Auto Offer.
  • Unit orientation: 24.0 hours.
  • Scrubs provided (blue).
  • COVID-19: Not required.
  • May not be realistic for nurses to take 48-hour contracts on this unit due to how busy it is.

Important Notes

  • RTO (Return to Origin) after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite. Any call-offs or additional RTO on the unit could possibly result in a Contract Cancellation and DNR (Do Not Rehire).
  • Cannot have worked at any Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center facility in violation of the above RTO policy.
