Job Summary and Qualifications
The Wound, Ostomy and Continence nurse is a RN who has graduated from an Accredited Wound Ostomy Continence (WOC) Nurse Program. The WOCN provides direct care and education for patients of all ages including the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and/or geriatric patient who are experiencing disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary tract and integumentary systems. Direct care will incorporate the following: abdominal stomas, fistulas, drains, acute and chronic wounds as well as urinary and fecal incontinence. The WOCN serves as a resource person in the areas of wounds, ostomies and continence care and provides education to the patient, patient support system and facility staff.
The WOCN serves as a consultant in the management of patients with complicated fistulas, wounds, ostomies and incontinence and provides recommendations for the effective and appropriate use of specialty beds, wound care products and ostomy supplies. Communicates appropriately to other employees and customers based on the situation and the age level of the person.
The WOCN provides ostomy marking prior to surgery as requested by a physician.
The WOCN serves as primary patient educator for all patients undergoing ostomy surgery as well as resource person for patients who have had previous surgery. Education includes pre-operative and postoperative teachings.
The WOCN provides Outpatient Education with physician referral for patients with pouching problems or with skin problems related to the ostomy.
The WOCN serves as an educator in the treatment of patients with ostomies, altered skin integrity and urinary incontinence for patients, patient families, nursing staff, physicians, administration and other disciplines to augment and support education services. The WOCN uses appropriate teaching-learning principles in order to best facilitate the information. The WOCN presents relevant in-services regarding the above-mentioned topics as requested by education or nursing directors.
The WOCN establishes relationships with others throughout MHS to develop a network and mentoring opportunities. Develops relationships with other departments within MHS and seeks out opportunities for integration and interaction.
