Introduction

The Prince William County Department of Parks & Recreation has an exciting opportunity for a Recreation Supervisor to lead the daily operations, programming, and services at Veterans Memorial Park. This position provides leadership for a dynamic recreation environment and plays an essential role in creating positive experiences for the community, staff, and park guests.

The Recreation Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily operations, developing and evaluating recreational programs and special events, supporting facility and park operations, supervising and developing staff, and ensuring a high level of customer service. The position works collaboratively with department leadership, staff, community partners, and the public to meet community needs and provide safe, welcoming, and engaging recreational opportunities.

About This Role:

The Recreation Supervisor provides professional leadership and administrative oversight for the programs, services, staff, and daily operations of Veterans Memorial Park. This position serves as a key leader within the park, balancing operational responsibilities with a strong focus on staff development, program quality, customer service, and community engagement.

Responsibilities include planning, implementing, promoting, monitoring, and evaluating recreation programs and special events; supervising, training, coaching, and evaluating year-round and seasonal staff; coordinating daily operational needs; addressing customer and facility concerns; and ensuring established policies, procedures, and safety standards are followed. And the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment, to include managing multiple priorities and responding effectively to the needs of staff, customers, and the community.

The Recreation Supervisor is a visible and hands-on leader who builds strong relationships with staff and the community while fostering a positive, team-oriented work environment. The position is expected to identify opportunities for improvement, respond effectively to changing operational needs, and help create a strong sense of community and belonging at Veterans Memorial Park.

The ideal candidate will be highly experienced, hands-on, well organized, forward-thinking, honest, and adaptable. This Recreation Supervisor won't simply accept the status quo; they will consistently look for new and better ways to achieve the Department's goals, deliver programs, and improve operations. They will move past the mindset of "This is how we've always done it" and won't hesitate to explore new ideas and approaches.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED. and 5 years of experience in recreation management, parks and recreation, facility operations, or a related field.

Preferences:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Parks and Recreation, Recreation Management, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Five or more years of public recreation management experience, including three or more years of supervisory experience.
  • Experience coordinating recreation programs, facility operations, events, or related services.
  • Local government experience.
  • Experience managing a diverse workforce and fostering an inclusive, positive team culture.
  • Experience overseeing a variety of recreation programs and services, including children's programming, aquatics, food and beverage operations, and facility rentals.
  • Experience managing site-based operations, program management, compliance, customer service, and business operations.
  • Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification.
  • Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Instructor certification.

Special Requirements:

  • DMV record checks on all licensed employees.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • Criminal background checks on all hires 18 years and older.
  • Fingerprinting required.

Work Schedule:

37.5 hours a week; typical schedule is between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm Monday to Friday, with weekend and holiday work required based on operational needs and event schedules. This position is classified as exempt and can adjust hours to meet operational needs.

Hiring Salary Range: $85,520.27-$100,612.08
