Position Summary

Target Hiring: $27.37 - 30.42

The purpose of the Recreation Coordinator is to support the planning, delivery, and promotion of Parks & Recreation programs, events, facilities, and community outreach initiatives. Coordinators may be assigned responsibilities in areas such as recreation programs, aquatics, facility operations, athletics/fields, marketing, or public outreach. The role works closely with residents, members, program participants, schools, community partners, and city staff to ensure safe, inclusive, and high-quality recreation experiences for all ages.

Essential Job Functions

Essential Job Functions represents 20%-50% of working time on a regular basis, subject to the varying demand of specific functions. All functions listed below are considered essential and are expected to be completed regularly and efficiently by any incumbent. Regular, punctual and on-site attendance is essential for all functions listed below:

Due to the varied nature of the role, duties may vary by operational assignment. All incumbents are expected to have working knowledge of all areas but may be assigned to focus on specific areas as operational needs dictate.

  1. Responsible for the operations and functional coordination of multiple areas of recreation center functions and programs, to include but not limited to:

Programs & Events:

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate youth and adult recreation programs, camps, classes, athletic events/leagues and community events.

  • Support event logistics, staffing, equipment needs, and safe program delivery.

  • Develop new program opportunities based on community interests and trends.

Community Outreach & Marketing:

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for residents, providing information and customer service.

  • Promote programs and events through social media, website updates, newsletters, and marketing materials.

  • Build and maintain partnerships with schools, businesses, and community organizations.

  • Support outreach efforts for new or renovated parks and recreation facilities.

Facilities & Operations:

  • Assist with daily operations of recreation and aquatics facilities, athletic fields, and other amenities.

  • Coordinate facility reservations, field scheduling, rentals, and internal department bookings.

  • Help maintain safe, clean, and well-equipped facilities; support concession operations as assigned.

Administration & Monitoring:

  • Track participation, maintain records, and prepare reports to assess program and facility performance.

  • Support budgeting, staffing coordination, and adherence to policies and safety procedures.

  • Implement risk management practices and ensure compliance across programs and facilities.

Other Job Functions:

Other Job Functions are essential but represent less than 20% of working time on a regular basis. These are performed with less regularity but are considered essential. All functions listed below are considered essential and are expected to be completed regularly and efficiently by any incumbent.

  • Prepares presentations, reports and other related documents for all audiences and interest groups.

  • This position is expected to step into the roles of any direct report at any time, and effectively perform all associated operational functions.

  • This position is expected to cross-train in functions related to Aquatics operations to reinforce continuity of operations between facilities.

  • May be required to work across office, field, aquatics and offsite locations based on operational needs.

Education and Experience

  • One (1) year of directly related experience is required. Two years of experience is preferred.

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.

  • An equivalent combination of the above experience and education to satisfy the minimum requirements of the position.

Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check and drug and alcohol test.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of recreation programming and operations.

  • Basic knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations relative to assigned functions.

  • Advanced skill in interpersonal communication and conflict resolution.

  • Advanced skill in the de-escalation of sensitive or aggressive customer/vendor/citizen issues.

  • Advanced skill in analyzing data, identifying trends and creating actionable data strategies.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment when implementing policies and addressing sensitive or complex public concerns; handle challenging or stressful interactions with tact and professionalism.

  • Ability to simultaneously coordinate multiple tasks and priorities and support multiple individuals, teams, and work groups.

  • Ability to establish and maintain project schedules and balance responsibilities for multiple projects.

  • Ability to continually demonstrate practical knowledge, analytical judgements and informed decision-making.

  • Must have the ability to work a flexible schedule that may regularly include weekends, evenings and holidays. Must be able to work in-office, in the field or in designated satellite environments.

Special Requirements

This position is classified as a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing during the course of employment.

Licenses and Certificates:

  • WSI and LGI Certification preferred.
  • CPRP Required or able to obtain within 6 months.
