We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as Recreation Assistant - Instructor, working with the Department of Parks & Recreation - Youth Activities Division. The ideal candidate will be a flexible and fun individual assigned duties and activities that provide an entertaining experience.

Under basic supervision, may perform a wide variety of activities in the safe delivery of general recreation, programs, and events. Depending on area of assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, providing coaching, instruction, and supervision to recreation program participants; leading the setup and operation of equipment and venues for events, programs, and facilities; monitoring the operation and maintenance at event sites; and/or providing bartending, beverage and food services for restaurant, banquet, and event customers.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the "Yuma Way", and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
  • Resolves routine problems encountered in performance of work assignments.
  • Performs related duties as assigned (see below).

Recreation Assistant/Instructor

  • Assists in preparing and coordinating program activities for a wide variety of age groups and special populations; duties will vary according to job assignment and individual skills.
  • Coordinates programs, activities, excursions and events; collects and distributes supplies and materials for events.
  • Organizes activities; schedules, inspects and prepares venues; assists with instructing, coaching, officiating, and/or scorekeeping games.
  • Acts as recreation leader, coach and referee for organized activities; explains and enforces rules and proper behavior; safety standards and good sportsmanship.
  • Supervises program participants, and regulations and safety precautions at indoor and outdoor facilities; maintains discipline, monitors behavior, enforces rules, and resolves issues; monitors program activities, and assists participants in activities and programs; reports and resolves complaints, requests, safety conditions, security issues, and illegal activities.
  • Supervises various programs and activities; verifies that supplies, equipment and facilities are in order and recommends supply needs to the supervisor.
  • Picks up trash and debris, and assists in the general maintenance of grounds, venue, and equipment; and prepares for play and special events; cleans, inspects and maintains bleachers, restrooms, lighting and periphery.
  • Sets up, tears down, and maintains facilities for events and scheduled programs; maintains general appearance of facilities by cleaning areas in and around the facility, sweeping floors, checking and restocking restrooms, cleaning and arranging equipment, and other general maintenance duties.
  • Instructs various arts, crafts and games, explaining the rules and techniques; evaluates individual performance and the effectiveness of instructional programs.
  • Prepares and sells food, beverages, admissions, and merchandise to customers.
  • May maintain routine attendance and participant records as necessary.
  • Responds to requests for information within the scope of authority and training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training, and Experience

  • No specific education or prior experience is required.
  • Customer service or maintenance experience, or participation in group programs, is preferred.
  • Must be at least 15 years of age.

Recreation Assistant/Instructor

  • One (1) year of experience teaching, playing, or participating in organized recreational programs; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of:

  • City policies, rules and regulations governing the conduct and safety of persons using municipal recreational facilities, programs, sporting competitions, and equipment.
  • Rules for athletic games and sporting competitions.
  • Arts and Crafts techniques.

Skill in:

  • Overseeing and controlling activities and participants.
  • Creating a safe and functional event environment, following established safety procedures and protocols, and protecting participants from personal injury.
  • Promoting a positive environment, good personal behavior, and safety standards.
  • Providing effective customer service and dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Following and understanding verbal and written instructions and procedures.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Arizona State Driver's License, Food Handler's permit/County Health Department Certificate, and Arizona liquor law Title 4 training may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed indoors and outdoors at City recreation facilities and venues; must maintain physical standards prescribed by the City; may be required to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects.

  • WORKERS COMP. - Insurance coverage for medical expenses and loss of income due to an on-the-job injury is provided by the City of Yuma for all employees.
  • UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE - Employees are covered by Unemployment Insurance.
  • SICK LEAVE - Employees are eligible to utilize paid sick leave immediately following 90 calendar days from their date of hire. Irregular part-time employees will accrue .0333 hours of sick leave for every hour they work. The annual accrual is maxed at 40 hours of sick leave.
  • HOLIDAYS- Part-time irregular or Seasonal employees who work the day of the City recognized holiday will be paid holiday pay for the amount of hours worked that day, up to eight hours. No holiday pay will be earned for days designated as "observed days". The following are City-recognized holidays:
