Job Description:
GENERAL PURPOSE: Under general supervision, oversees the recreational activities at assigned community center; oversees and provides planned activities for the community residents; assists in maintaining the cleanliness of the gym and community center; and may assist in coordinating the rental use of the center.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma/GED Certificate from an accredited institution and six months experience that includes interaction with varying age groups, individually or in groups, (youth/seniors) within a recreational field or a related profession.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
- Valid New Mexico driver’s license or ability to obtain a valid New Mexico driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
Additional Requirements:
- Ability to maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license
- Must pass criminal background check
- Pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
This is a safety- sensitive position subject to random drug testing in accordance with County policy Article XIII Drug and Alcohol Policy and Testing-Drug Free Workplace of the Sandoval County Personnel Rules and Regulation.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Position reports to the Community Center Supervisor and does not exercise supervision over lower level staff.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
- May serve in lead capacity or provide direction to other assigned assistants depending on the activity.
- Responsible for carrying out and monitoring programs as designed for recreational activities such as volleyball, basketball, soccer, board games, card games, crafts, and school homework sessions; enforces rules of facility and of recreational activity.
- Coordinates with management and assists in the scheduling of recreational activities and rental use of facilities; sets up programs and facilities for program use in the center and recreational gym; and maintains all materials, tools, and equipment in good order.
- Creates posters, fliers, and letters to advertise various activities.
- Maintains center inventory; monitors levels of supplies and informs supervisor when new supplies are required.
- Attends meetings and participates in various community committees associated with Community Center
- Oversees activities; ensures that safety requirements for equipment, activities, facilities and activities are met; and prepares reports related to program activities and needs; provides other reports as requested.
- Maintains and cleans the gym and restrooms on a regular basis to include sweeping, mopping and window washing.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge of:
- Operational characteristics, services, and activities of a Community Services Office, including business/industry principles and practices related to work assigned.
- Principles, rules, materials, equipment, and organization of a variety of play, sport, and recreation activities.
- Facilities and equipment used in community recreational activities.
- Safety and first aid techniques.
- Computer skills and software sufficient to create posters, fliers, and letters to advertise activities.
- Effective communication principles and practices including oral and written communication.
- Appropriate equipment, tools, and materials used.
- Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers, computer applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and statistical databases.
- English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Principles of business letter writing.
Required Skill in:
- Instructing and leading groups of program participants, including both youth and seniors.
- Stimulating interest and enthusiasm among others.
- Organizing, controlling, and instructing groups of individuals involved in recreational activities, including maintaining discipline.
- Working with equipment, tools, and materials required in area of assignment.
- Maintaining records and preparing reports.
- Creating posters, fliers, and other related media in order to advertise community service program activities.
- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public, including meeting and dealing tactfully with the public.
- Utilizing personal computer software programs and other relevant software affecting assigned work and in compiling and preparing spreadsheets.
- Interpreting and administering policies and procedures sufficient to discuss, resolve, and explain them.
Physical Demands / Work Environment:
- Work is performed in a standard recreation environment including a community center gymnasium and outdoor facilities.
- Requires physical movement sufficient to officiate/participate in recreational/sports activities including bending, stooping, walking and running.
- Occasionally required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Work regularly requires speaking, hearing and utilizing a phone, cell phone, copier or fax machine.
- May occasionally be exposed to irate customers or infectious diseases when interacting with members of the public.
- May be exposed to working machinery, potential physical harm, and hazardous chemicals when monitoring recreational activities and maintaining the community center facilities and grounds.
