Records Technician - Tallahassee Police Department

The Tallahassee Police Department is seeking a detail-oriented Records Technician to manage the intake, review, and verification of police records for entry into Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) databases, including lost, missing, and stolen property and persons information. This work supports accurate reporting and information-sharing across law enforcement statewide.

The position also serves as a primary point of contact at the front counter, assisting the public with records requests and related inquiries in accordance with Floridas public records law.

This role requires strong attention to detail, sound judgment in handling sensitive information, and the ability to work effectively with both the public and department staff.

Essential Job Duties

  • Reviews offense reports, accident reports, field interviews, trespass warnings, citations, and report supplements for entry into the Records Management System (RMS)
  • Determines crime type and assigns the correct codes using CIS, NIBRS, FIBRS, and Florida State Statutes designations
  • Enters data required for the Police Departments submittals to FDLE
  • Processes and prepares citations in compliance with Traffic Court criteria
  • Responds to phone and walk-in requests, conducts fingerprinting, retrieves data and microfilm, and applies public records law when releasing information
  • May assist with identification-related problem solving
  • May help administrative or supervisory staff troubleshoot records management system issues, and cross-trains and trains new employees and recruits
  • Supports supervisory staff with planning, research, and special projects
  • Performs related work as required

Minimum Training & Experience

High school diploma or GED and three years of office clerical and/or typing experience in an office environment. Successfully completed secretarial or office clerical course work beyond the high school level may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester hours or 720 classroom hours on a year-for-year basis. Successful completion of college course work may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester hours per year on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Applicants shall truthfully complete the Criminal History Questions on the City Employment Application. Any omissions, falsifications, misstatements, or misrepresentations of the information provided may disqualify an applicant. The top applicant chosen for this position will be required to complete and pass a Truth Verification Examination prior to an employment offer being made.

Salary Range

$16.1262 to $43.7596/hourly. Hiring rate generally will not exceed $25.1539/hour.
