  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) on mixer trucks, including oil changes, filter replacements, brake inspections, and lubrication per manufacturer and company schedules.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems on front-discharge and rear-discharge mixer trucks (e.g., Kenworth, Peterbilt, Mack, International).
  • Inspect and maintain mixer drum drive systems including PTO units, hydraulic pumps, charge/discharge motors, and drum roller assemblies.
  • Service and repair truck chassis components including engines, transmissions (manual and automatic), differentials, suspension, steering, and braking systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems including starting/charging systems, lighting, ABS/EBS, and electronic engine controls using diagnostic scan tools.
  • Perform welding and fabrication repairs as needed on mixer drums, chutes, hoppers, fenders, and other structural components (MIG, stick).
  • Maintain water systems, washout systems, additive dispensing systems, and ancillary truck-mounted equipment.
  • Conduct DOT pre-trip/post-trip inspections and ensure all vehicles meet FMCSA safety standards and pass annual DOT inspections.
  • Maintain accurate service records, work orders, and parts usage logs in the fleet management system.
  • Respond to roadside breakdowns and perform field repairs to minimize delivery delays.
  • Maintain a clean and organized shop environment and ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials (oils, coolants, solvents).
  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, drivers, and management regarding vehicle status, repair timelines, and parts needs.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a diesel/heavy truck mechanic, preferably in ready-mix concrete, construction, or heavy equipment industries.
  • Proficient in diesel engine diagnostics and repair (Cummins, PACCAR, Detroit, Navistar).
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic systems, air brake systems, and electrical/electronic troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics.
  • Must possess own basic hand tools; specialty and shop tools provided by company.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL Class B (or willingness to obtain within 90 days) preferred.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certifications (T2, T4, T5, T6, T7, T8).
  • Experience with front-discharge mixer trucks (e.g., Oshkosh, London Machinery, Continental).
  • Welding certifications (AWS) or demonstrated welding proficiency.
  • Experience with Command Alkon or similar fleet/dispatch management systems.
  • HVAC (Section 608/609) refrigerant certification.
  • Familiarity with OSHA workplace safety regulations and DOT/FMCSA compliance requirements.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, and climb for extended periods.
  • Work performed outdoors and in shop environments; exposure to extreme heat (Arizona summers), noise, dust, fumes, and vibration.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and at heights when required.
  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination for precision mechanical work.

Work Schedule & Conditions

  • Standard schedule: Monday-Friday, start times typically 4:00 AM-5:00 AM to support early batch operations.
  • Overtime and occasional weekend work required based on fleet needs and seasonal demand.
  • On-call availability for emergency roadside repairs during operating hours.
  • Shop and field work in the Phoenix, AZ metro area.

The Ready Mix Truck Mechanic is responsible for the preventive maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of mixer trucks, support vehicles, and related mobile equipment in the Sunmat Materials fleet. This position ensures maximum uptime and operational readiness of all vehicles, supporting safe and efficient delivery of ready-mix concrete products across the Phoenix metropolitan area.
