POSITION DESCRIPTION

Taft College is seeking a pool of qualified candidates with demonstrated instructional skills to join an outstanding team of faculty and staff to provide high-quality programs and services for our students.

Under general supervision, the Reader provides dictation of instructional materials and administers speed tests for court reporting students. This role requires clear and precise enunciation of standard English, familiarity with common phrasing, and the ability to maintain consistent pacing at various speed levels. The Reader supports both in-person and Zoom-based classroom environments while helping maintain an organized and professional learning setting. The Reader may also perform a variety of instructional support tasks in a classroom or other learning environment which may include limited or non-English speaking students; assists instructors and provide classroom support in a specific assigned subject matter; performs routine clerical recordkeeping; performs related duties as assigned.

Employees in this classification are responsible for providing oral dictation of instructional materials to students enrolled in the court reporting program.

Note: This position is for in-person and on-line courses

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

The following duties are typical of those performed by employees in the classification, however, employees may perform other related duties not listed and not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each employee.

  • Dictate instructional materials, practice drills, and speed tests for court reporting students at varying speeds. Materials include Jury Charge, Literary, Medical, and Multi-Voice content.
  • Use a stopwatch to ensure accurate timing during all dictation sessions.
  • Maintain consistent pacing and clarity appropriate to each assigned speed level.

  • Assist students in the proper use of computers and other tools appropriate for use in a classroom or learning lab.
  • Meet with professor at the beginning of the semester to set goals and/or objectives.

  • Participate in required training.
  • Attend all scheduled activities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Proficiency with basic computer tools, including Zoom, email, and document programs
  • Strong reading and verbal communication skills with clear pronunciation and the appropriate speed based on the course requirement.
  • Six (6) months or more full-time or one (1) year or more of part-time experience working with students in an educational setting.
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students; and staff and students with physical and learning disabilities.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education or public service environment
  • Experience with or knowledge of stenotype machine (or stenograph), Computer-Aided Transcription (CAT) software, and external audio gear like high-quality microphones and digital backup recorders
  • Ability to read aloud for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to follow precise timing and speed protocols.
  • Patient, professional, and supportive when working with students.
  • Ability to adapt to both in-person and virtual classroom environments.
  • Bilingual: Spanish/English

COMPENSATION $26.37 -$29.06 per hour.
