What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is looking for skilled Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) to join the Radiation Protection (RP) Division. RCTs support a wide variety of different work activities across a broad range of facilities and can learn new skills and expand their expertise in the identification and understanding of radiological hazards and controls. LANL RCTs implement radiation protection requirements and work independently on challenging projects requiring collaboration with multiple work groups. Assignments can involve activities in varying work environments and weather conditions. Radiological Control Technician 4 ($87,800 - $143,000)
As an RCT 4, you will provide direct support to field implementation of the Radiation Protection Program through the execution of radiological job coverage, workplace surveys, and documentation of radiological data. In addition, you will assist and mentor less experienced RCTs in the execution of radiation monitoring, contamination control, emergency response, and the implementation of radiation work permits and other work documents.

Radiological Control Technician 5 ($106,400 - $176,000)
In addition to what was outlined at the RCT 4 level, you may serve as the primary Radiation Protection point of contact for assisting in job planning, coordinating resources, and resolving issues for radiological work activities. You will also provide technical leadership of less experiences RCTs, ensuring compliance with radiological procedures.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Experience providing radiological support for moderate and high-hazard radiological work.
  • Experience with Senior-level and technical knowledge in radiation protection principles and practices, and ability to implement those principles in at least one area of health physics (e.g. accelerators, reactors, actinides).
  • Experience with Senior-level in radiation monitoring, personnel exposure control, and other radiation protection activities.
  • Demonstrated experience and outstanding skills conceptualizing and communicating major elements of radiological safety/protection to all levels of personnel.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment such as respiratory protection, safety glasses, anti-contamination clothing.
  • Senior-level experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigation alternative solutions, and recommending solution on problems affecting radiological safety/protection.
  • Demonstrated experience in advanced ability to provide technical leadership to other technicians.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating activities at very high levels of complexity.
  • Demonstrated experience and Senior-level technical ability, which is expected to be Senior-level in at least several health physics areas (e.g. air monitoring, accelerators instrumentation, software development, and applied health physics).
  • Demonstrated experience and outstanding ability to implement improvement actions and ensure ongoing performance.
  • Senior-level ability and experience in using computer-based office applications such as e-mail and word processing applications.

Additional Job Requirements for Radiation Control Technician 5:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Serve as the primary Radiation Protection point of contact for assisting in job planning, coordinating resources, and resolving issues for radiological work activities.
  • Provide technical leadership of less experiences RCTs, ensuring compliance with radiological procedures.
  • All qualification, skills, knowledge, and experience are expected to be performed at an advanced level.

Education and Years of Relevant Experience at Radiological Control Technician 4 level: This position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education and Years of Relevant Experience at Radiological Control Technician 5 level: This position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of 6 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training, certification, and/or education may be expected.

DOE O.426.2A: Requires High School Diploma.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Prior DOE RCT experience
  • Active DOE Q clearance
  • Currently DOE Core certified
  • NRRPT (National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists)
  • Familiar with LANL policies, practices, and procedures

Essential Job Functions(can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 35 pounds; Reading vision; Peripheral Vision, Depth Perception; Ability to speak; Ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 htz). Ability to sit, crawl, stand, walk, run, and climb; in addition to reaching overhead, horizontally, and down; Free from chronic wounds or chronic rashes which disrupt the integrity of the skin that would prevent safe entry into controlled areas; Ability to use stairways, fixed ladders, and ladders up to six feet. Must be physically able to work in demanding environments.

Work Environment: Use of protective clothing, including safety glasses and radiological anti-contamination clothing.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a rotating shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.


Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance:Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
