Interpersonal Skills Very necessary and important. Must be able to interact with the patients and their families as well as physicians, nurses and other personnel of the health system. Must be able to work well under pressure. Essential Physical Requirements Ability to lift a substantial amount of weight in order to move patients, lift patients, as well as treatment blocks. In everyday work there is a great deal of stooping, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, walking, and, sometimes, immobilizing patients. Essential Mental Abilities Ability to use physics and mathematics in calculations for treatment planning. Ability to interpret data, calculate doses, explain calculations if necessary. Ability to follow instructions from physicians for treatments. All of the above require good concentration and alertness and good organizational skills, as well as short and long-term memory. Must be adaptable to every day change. Essential Sensory Requirements Must have visual skills and hearing in order to see lasers, assess patients, look at treatment films, as well as set up patients using the markings from simulation and hear the patient through the intercom system during treatments. Exposure to Hazards Radiation exposure hazard with treatments and filming; radiation exposure if assisting in implants; lead fumes making cerrobend blocks. Slight risk from blood and body fluids. Eye, neck and wrist strain from keyboard\mouse work. Other Skills and Abilities Delivers and schedules daily radiation treatments as prescribed by the radiation oncologist. Verifies treatment fields and patient positions by taking daily imaging utilizing various media. Performs weekly treatment charts checks to verify treatment doses, cumulative doses, and radiation doses to body structures. Arranges for transportation if in-patients to the department and via van or ambulance. Observes patients on a daily basis for possible radiation therapy induced side effects and alerts nurses or radiation oncologists. Addresses patients' questions and concerns within the scope of professional practice. Performs quality assurance procedures and collects data for medical physicist's dissemination. Sets up treatment fields, both x-ray photon and electron, on the treatment machines when a C.T. simulation is not necessary. This involves patient immobilization, accumulation of measurements, and X-ray verification. Acquires C.T. images for the purpose of treatment planning. This involves producing patient immobilization devices, accumulation of measurements and images. Archives, stores, and transfers CT images for treatment planning purposes. Uses the department software and EMR to document treatment fields. Other duties as assigned Education Graduate of an American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) accredited training program in radiation therapy - Required Work Experience Six months in radiation therapy - Preferred Experience with IMRT, 3-D therapy and brachytherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery - Preferred Licenses and Certifications Basic Life Support (BLS) - Required Upon Hire Radiation Therapist - Must have registration in therapy or is registry eligible and pass the registry examination - Required within 1 Year Registered Technologist (R.T.) - Preferred Upon Hire Travel Requirements Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed. - Required Delivers and schedules daily radiation treatments as prescribed by the radiation oncologist.
