JOB SUMMARY The radiation therapist is a member of the radiation oncology team who has knowledge of the overall characteristics and clinical relevance of radiation oncology treatment machines and equipment, and has the education and expertise necessary to perform treatment modalities in accordance with radiation dose distributions and dose calculations in collaboration with the medical physicist and radiation oncologist.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

• Coordinate treatment simulations and tumor localization on dedicated devices, including CT, MRI, and PET when indicated, for radiation oncology treatment planning.
• Supervise, perform, or assist in the planning of the production of moulds, casts, and other immobilization devices.
• Supervise the therapist staff in the implementation of the treatment plan including: the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement, and other treatment variables.
• Provide physics and technical support to the Medical Physicist, in radiation protection, qualitative machine calibrations, and quality assurance of the radiation oncology equipment.
• Participate in clinical research for the development and implementation of new techniques.
• Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing radiation therapy and use of equipment to minimize hazards of electric shock, burns and extraneous radiation to patients.
• Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric and general population.
• Responsible for safe handling of equipment; performs a pre-procedure check on all equipment; provides preventative maintenance.
• Instructs and prepares patients for radiation therapy procedures.
• Determines most suitable anatomical posture and positions and shields patients accordingly.
• Reviews prescribed dosage of ionizing radiation for accuracy before all treatments.
• Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
• Practices medical and surgical asepsis at all times.
• Observes patient reaction to radiation therapy; reports any patient changes to the radiologist.
• Able to assess patient pain interfering with treatment procedure - makes appropriate physician/nurse contact for intervention.
• Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
• Assists Radiation Oncologist with radiation treatment plans.
• Documentation meets current standards and policies.
• Assists in maintaining basic records and reports.
• Assists in maintaining files.
• Assists in training of students and ancillary personnel.
• Interacts professionally with patient/family.
• Treat patients and families with respect and dignity.
• Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
• Is acquainted with local fire and safety regulations.
• Checks prescription, diagnosis, chart and patient identification.
• Explains procedures to the patients, means of communication during treatment and procedure to follow if an emergency arises during treatment.
• Reinforces the Radiation Oncologists instructions regarding reactions to the treatment and their care.
• Prepares room and equipment for the patient according to the prescription, i.e., immobilization devises, blocks, field sizes, etc.
• Transfers patients safely to the couch or wheelchair giving special care to catheters, IVs, or any special needs of the patient.
• Accurately sets up the patient according to the technical parameters detailed in the chart.
• Verifies the treatment Mus and beam energy in the treatment chart noting any prescribed adjustments.
• Maintains auditory, visual and verbal contact with the patient during treatment.
• Accurately documents treatment Mus cumulative doses, treatment parameters, instructions, diagrams, photos, and all billing information.
• Maintains the scheduling and daily logs for the assigned treatment unit with efficiency and productivity in mind.
• Performs treatment simulation and all that is required for procedure including cerrobend block fabrication.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education / Experience / License and Certifications

• High School graduate; BS degree preferred.
• Graduation from an AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology, either college affiliated or hospital trained.
• Graduation from a 12-month course in Radiation Therapy Technology.
• Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
• Certified by the State of Wyoming to practice and administer radiation.
• Current BLS certification, required.
• One year of experience under a Board Certified Radiologist/Radiation Oncologist.
• Capable of performing independently radiation therapy and dosimetry plans.
• Communicates routinely with medical oncologist and medical physicist with regards to dosimetry planning.
