Description

Job Title: Radiation Therapist

Schedule: Full-Time | Monday – Friday (8-hour shifts between 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM)

Call Status: No Call / No Weekends

Location: Multi-Site Rotation (West Ashley, Downtown, and Berkeley as needed)

 

Required Education:
-High School Diploma/GED
-Satisfactory completion of formal training in radiation therapy in an AMA approved school
Preferred Education:
-N/A

Required Certification & Licensure:
-South Carolina Radiation Quality Standard Association (SCRQSA) Radiation Therapist
-ARRT Radiation Therapy (T) certification
-BLS thru the American Heart Association

Position Summary

Under the direction of a Radiation Oncologist, the Radiation Therapist performs radiation therapy procedures, operates therapeutic equipment, assists with patient examinations, and delivers prescribed doses of external beam radiation and radioactive elements. Duties occur across department areas—including the simulator, treatment rooms, exam rooms, and occasionally the operating room or inpatient nursing units.

Key Responsibilities

  • Treatment Delivery (40%): Accurately set up patients and deliver prescribed radiation therapy doses per physician orders.

  • Clinical Simulations (15%): Perform clinical simulations on treatment machines and CT Simulators.

  • Device Fabrication (15%): Construct custom electron/photon molds, mounted/un-mounted blocks, and patient immobilization devices.

  • EMR & Administrative Documentation (15%): Maintain precise electronic medical records, tracking cumulative dose totals, treatment aids (bolus, wedges), clinical notes, billing, scheduling, and patient photos.

  • Patient Care & Communication (15%): Educate patients on procedures, ensure comfort using positioning aids, address patient concerns, and immediately report treatment complications to physicians or nursing staff.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Required Experience: At least 1 year of relevant radiation therapy experience (clinical education internships count toward required time).

  • Technical Knowledge: Strong foundation in radiation therapy principles, radiation safety protocols, dose calculations, equipment operation, and Quality Assurance (QA) standards.

  • Core Competencies: Self-directed, detail-oriented, adaptable under pressure, excellent verbal communication, and strict adherence to HIPAA/confidentiality.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Physical Demands: Constant reaching; frequent standing and walking; intermittent lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 lbs.

  • Working Conditions: Healthcare environment with exposure risks to ionizing radiation, bloodborne pathogens, body fluids, and medical chemicals. Moderate noise level.
