Description

Eleven Recruiting is searching for a Quality Engineer to join a rapidly growning aerospace manufacturing sitting onsite in Freeland, Michigan.
This is a hands-on, shop-floor-focused quality engineering role where you’ll work directly with CNC machining, inspection, manufacturing, and engineering teams. A key part of the position involves in-machine measurement while components remain fixtured in CNC machining centers, making this an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys combining engineering expertise with practical manufacturing experience.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform precision dimensional inspections of ball screws, nuts, and other precision-machined components using CMMs, optical measurement systems, micrometers, profilometers, thread measurement equipment, and other metrology tools.
  • Perform in-machine inspection and measurement while parts remain fixtured in CNC machining centers to verify tool offsets, critical dimensions, and machining accuracy.
  • Develop and maintain inspection plans, control plans, and First Article Inspection (FAI) documentation.
  • Evaluate critical ball screw characteristics including lead accuracy, pitch variation, straightness, runout, surface finish, and related geometric requirements.
  • Work closely with machinists and manufacturing engineers to ensure processes consistently achieve required tolerances.
  • Analyze Cp/Cpk and process capability for critical characteristics and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Investigate nonconforming material, perform root-cause analysis, and support RCCA/8D corrective and preventive actions.
  • Review and approve work instructions, inspection methods, and manufacturing/process changes.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 9001, AS9100, AS9102, customer requirements, and internal quality standards.
  • Prepare and maintain FAI packages, inspection reports, deviation requests, and other quality documentation.
  • Participate in internal and external audits, supplier assessments, and customer quality reviews.
  • Partner with design engineering to interpret GD&T, engineering drawings, and tolerance stack-ups.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to improve fixturing, machining strategies, inspection methods, and overall inspection workflows.
  • Support supplier quality activities, including incoming inspection and supplier corrective actions.
  • Evaluate customer quality concerns and drive timely investigation, resolution, and communication with appropriate internal teams.
  • Review new quotes and purchase orders for quality requirements and ensure applicable requirements are communicated to affected departments.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of Quality Engineering experience in aerospace, precision machining, motion control, or similarly high-precision manufacturing environments.
  • Strong knowledge of dimensional metrology and GD&T, including ASME Y14.5.
  • Hands-on experience with precision measurement equipment and inspection techniques.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision while knowing when to escalate complex quality issues.
Key Skills & Competencies:
  • Demonstrated experience performing in-machine inspection and interpreting measurements while components remain fixtured.
  • Experience programming and operating CMMs, including PC-DMIS, Zeiss Calypso, or comparable software.
  • Strong manual inspection and precision measurement skills.
  • Understanding of ball screw geometry, lead accuracy, preload, runout, and mechanical performance characteristics.
  • Working knowledge of AS9100, AS9102, and aerospace quality systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience with root-cause analysis, RCCA, 8D, and corrective action methodologies.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.
  • Comfortable working directly with machinists, manufacturing engineers, suppliers, and design engineers.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Aerospace actuation systems or precision motion-control components.
  • Advanced metrology and statistical process control (SPC).
  • CNC machining, CNC programming, or fixture design.
  • Experience with complex precision-machined components and tight-tolerance manufacturing.
  • Exposure to non-destructive testing (NDT) methods used with mechanical/aerospace components.
  • Experience working with ERP/MRP systems.
  • Supplier quality engineering experience.
