JOB SUMMARY
The Quality Control Intern will support Quality Control Inspectors and Technicians in ensuring that precast concrete products are manufactured in accordance with company quality standards, project specifications, drawings, and applicable industry requirements. This position provides hands-on experience with precast concrete manufacturing, inspection processes, quality documentation, and production operations.
The Quality Control Intern will work closely with the Quality Control department, production employees, project managers, engineers, and plant staff to identify and address quality issues and help ensure products are manufactured correctly and to specification. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, analytical, eager to learn, and comfortable working in an active plant and field environment.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Assist Quality Control Inspectors and Technicians with pre-pour and post-pour inspections of precast concrete products and setups. Conduct inspections during production to verify that products and form setups meet design specifications, drawings, and quality standards. Measure concrete products and form setups using a tape measure and other appropriate tools to verify dimensions and accuracy. Compare products, setups, and components to shop drawings, blueprints, and project specifications. Assist with inspection of raw materials to verify compliance with project requirements. Assist with concrete laboratory testing, including slump, air content, temperature, and compressive strength testing under appropriate supervision. Utilize tablets, computers, and quality control software to complete inspection checklists and document pre-pour and post-pour inspections. Maintain accurate and organized records of inspections, tests, non-conformance reports, and other quality documentation. Prepare reports summarizing inspection findings and communicate discrepancies or quality concerns to the appropriate Quality Control and production personnel. Work closely with production employees and plant staff to ensure quality control procedures are followed throughout the manufacturing process. Coordinate with the Quality Control department and production team to identify, communicate, and help resolve quality issues. Collaborate with project managers and engineers to address quality concerns and support corrective actions. Cross-train in pre-pour and post-pour inspection processes and assist team members as needed. Assist in laboratory organization, sample preparation, testing activities, and maintaining a clean and organized work environment. Learn and apply industry standards, quality procedures, and best practices related to precast concrete manufacturing. Assist with maintaining compliance with applicable local, state, and federal requirements related to concrete production. Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements. Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent. Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred. Construction Management students with a concrete-focused curriculum are encouraged to apply. Ability to accurately read and use a tape measure. Ability or willingness to learn how to read shop drawings, blueprints, and technical drawings. Basic math skills with strong attention to detail. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Self-motivated with a willingness to learn and take initiative. Ability to prioritize tasks and work safely in an active manufacturing environment. Basic proficiency with computers, tablets, Microsoft Office, and related software. Valid driver's license with a clear driving record. Reliable and punctual attendance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Major or coursework in Industrial Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field. Construction Management coursework with an emphasis on concrete or construction operations. Prior experience in manufacturing, construction, precast concrete, quality control, or laboratory environments. Experience reading shop drawings, blueprints, or technical drawings. Familiarity with concrete testing or quality control procedures. Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus.
FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires frequent and/or constant standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, and observing. The position also requires hand/eye coordination and may require climbing, balancing, stooping, and crouching.
The Quality Control Intern will work in an active manufacturing and plant environment and may be exposed to moving industrial equipment, hazardous energies (LOTO), ladders, working at heights, uneven or unimproved surfaces, high noise levels, and hand and power tools. The position may require working in confined spaces and exposure to adverse weather conditions, including heat, cold, and rain.
The intern must be able to safely navigate uneven surfaces, muddy conditions, loose rock, and loose or soft sand. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required. Candidate must be medically qualified through any required job-specific physical examination.
