Make the hardest concepts look easy
How do you draw the coagulation cascade so it finally makes sense? Or turn a dense legal doctrine into a diagram someone remembers on exam day? At UWorld, that's not a hypothetical. It's Tuesday.
UWorld creates learning tools for some of the world's most high-stakes exams, and our visuals are a big part of why students love them. We're looking for an experienced graphic or publication designer to step up as our Publications & Graphics Manager and lead our talented team of designers in creating original images across a wide range of exams, in both print and digital formats.
This role is part designer, part creative director, and part coach. You'll bring a strong print background, ideally in books or catalogs, and the kind of design chops that earn your team's respect. You'll partner with our writing teams to dream up fresh, clever ways to visualize difficult concepts, guide your team to do their best work, and make sure every image looks just as sharp on the printed page as it does on screen. If you get a thrill from turning complexity into clarity, you'll feel right at home.
Where you'll fit
You'll report to the Creative Director and work daily with the department project manager and fellow managers within the Art & Illustration department. You'll also be a key bridge between your team, content leads, and leadership across the company.
What you'll do
- Lead and inspire a creative team. Support and empower your graphic artists through regular one-on-ones, mentor them in problem-solving and planning, and champion their professional growth.
- Turn tough ideas into great visuals. Collaborate with writing teams to brainstorm original, memorable ways to illustrate challenging concepts.
- Bring print expertise to the table. Guide your team in creating visuals that translate flawlessly to print, from layout and typography to color and production-ready files.
- Own the look. Maintain our style guide and library of 2D assets so every image feels unmistakably UWorld, in print and digital formats alike.
- Run the creative rhythm. Organize and lead Graphics team meetings and image reviews with content leads, keeping feedback constructive and projects moving.
- Keep the production engine humming. Help maintain an efficient, high-quality production process, and track and report on productivity and quality with a consistent, fair methodology.
- Know the big picture. Stay up to speed on all of our products, their upgrades, and upcoming priorities so your team is always a step ahead.
- Be your team's advocate. Serve as a liaison to leadership and other departments, making sure your team's work and needs are seen and heard.
- Build the dream team. Actively support recruiting for onsite, offsite, and contract graphic artists.
Requirements
What you bring
- Bachelor's degree in Graphic Arts, Graphic Design, or a related discipline
- A solid background as a graphic designer or publication designer, with a portfolio that shows it
- Hands-on experience designing printed materials. Books or catalogs are ideal, but experience with direct mail, brochures, posters, or similar print pieces is a must.
- A working knowledge of print production, including preparing files for print and achieving consistent, high-quality results
- Experience leading, mentoring, or managing designers, ideally within a creative department
- Expert-level skills in Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
- Experience creating vector graphics, charts, infographics, and simple illustrations
- Experience creating Presentation Materials like interactive PPTs and Google Slide decks
- Excellent project management and resource allocation skills
- The ability to manage, problem-solve, and execute within an established design and visual style
- A genuine drive to build strong relationships with collaborators inside and outside the department
- A sharp eye for detail and strong organizational skills
- The ability to juggle competing priorities while keeping your team focused and energized
- Comfort giving and receiving constructive feedback.
Bonus points
- Knowledge of ADA-compliant, accessible design principles and how to apply them to creative projects
- Experience with HTML and UI/UX design.
