Are you skilled in hands-on work that keeps roadways safe and functional for the community? The City of Hampton is seeking a dedicated and safety-focused professional to perform skilled traffic maintenance work involving traffic signs, barriers, and guardrails. This position plays a critical role in supporting traffic operations, public safety, and emergency response efforts throughout the City.

The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in traffic operations, a solid working knowledge of tools and equipment, and the ability to work effectively with the public and fellow team members. This role requires flexibility, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety, as work may occur in challenging conditions and outside of standard work hours.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Strong experience in traffic operations required; some experience in Thermo-Plastic pavement markings is preferred; strong knowledge of hand tools, carpentry, mechanics or painting; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with the general public and other personnel.
  • Must have the ability to be IMSA Signs and Marking certified and do so within 1 year of hire date; work zone certified within 6 months of hire date.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hamptons criteria.
  • Must have or obtain a Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B within 180 days of employment.
  • This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements and the City's current substance abuse policy.
  • Must successfully pass a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements

  • Frequent contact with the general public and other city employees.
  • May require working beyond a standard 40-hour work week to include nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Work conditions can be disagreeable and potentially dangerous.
  • The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
