Job Duties:

The Virginia Department of Health Portsmouth District is seeking a Public Health Nurse to join the team. The Public Health Nurse will independently provide professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes, and schools, as well as other community or congregate care settings. The incumbent will perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, and administer medication and case management. Participates in public health emergencies and community health assessments. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code. May supervise support staff.

VDH Requirements:

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Measles
  • Mumps
  • Rubella
  • Varicella
  • A one-time dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine
  • Tdap vaccine (boosters shall be received every 10 years)
  • Current years seasonal influenza vaccination

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum KSAs:

• Communicates verbally and in writing to analyze problems, situations, and suggest solutions • Leadership, follow directions, and establish priorities • Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique • Ability to function independently, prioritize, and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member, and relate to the public • Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology, immunizations, basic nursing science, medical terminology, and case management

Additional Considerations:

• Additional study in health promotion or public health is preferred • BSN preferred • Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion
