Core Responsibilities:

This is professional services work in providing direct nursing services to individuals and families in an assigned geographic and programmatic area. Responsibilities include care planning and management, conducting home and field visits, conducting clinics and conferences, advising and assisting civic groups on nursing and public health needs, and performing certain senior level administrative functions. This class is distinguished from the Public Health Nurse I by its senior level administrative responsibilities for: (1) planning and implementing comprehensive orientation and training of new Public Health Nurses and acting as a preceptor for nursing/medical students; (2) planning, and coordinating staff meetings in cooperation with the supervisor; (3) planning and conducting caseload and record reviews according to established review procedures; (4) attending meetings and conferences as a representative of the supervisor when so delegated; and (5) being available to other unit staff when the supervisor is not available or when assigned for ongoing consultation and as a resource nurse. Work is performed under limited supervision.

You will also:
  • Apply nursing process to individuals and families including health assessment, care plan development, implementation and evaluation, resource coordination, and/or referral to meet demonstrated health care needs.
  • Plans, develop, and coordinates client care with hospitals, medical providers, schools, and social services agencies to ensure necessary services are delivered.
  • Assesses need for health care clinics; and organizes and coordinates physicians, volunteers, providers, families, and community agencies to conduct health care clinics within communities.
  • Observes family environment, identifies health problems or at-risk behavior, and contacts appropriate resources and agencies to respond to family and client needs.
  • Teaches prevention and control measures of communicable and non-communicable diseases to provide information.
  • Acts as team coordinator and collaborates with health professionals, social workers, community agencies, and volunteers to provide nursing services in community health programs, schools, conferences, and clinics.
  • Plans and implements comprehensive orientation and training of new Public Health Nurses and acts as preceptor for nursing/medical students to assist in training and orienting employees and students.
  • Assists supervisor in planning, organizing, and coordinating staff meetings and assists other nursing staff to provide assistance.
  • Plans and conduct caseload and record reviews of Public Health Nurses according to established review procedures to assist supervisor.
  • Attends meetings and conferences and fills in for supervisors to provide continuity of operation.
  • Collects data and prepares records, reports, and statistical information to assist in the appraisal and planning of immunization and disease control programs.

Preferred candidates will also have:
  • Knowledge of public health programs, current nursing principles and practices, and nursing process.
  • Knowledge of consultative techniques used in the field of public health nursing.
  • Ability to organize and conduct clinics, conferences, and school health programs.
  • Ability to plan and implement comprehensive orientation and training programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in nursing -OR- graduation from an accredited school of nursing and 2 years of professional nursing experience.

LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class).

Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse as issued by the State Board of Nursing.
